 Today's advice comes from ACS CEO Lynn Blodgett's interview with the New York Times: "Give people control, hold them accountable, give them control of their resources, and then monitor what they do. And if you do that, you’re going to tap into, in our business, the highest level of drive — entrepreneurial drive." Blodgett, who runs ACS — a Xerox company that deals in IT services and business process outsourcing — and says he visualizes his operation as a series of sole proprietorships. Fostering in each individual employee that sense of agency and entrepreneurial spirit nurtures ideas and encourages more pragmatic thinking. For example, he says, workers are more willing to cope with a two-year-old computer when their mindset is whether they personally would invest in new equipment. With that, it's helpful to instill high levels of accountability, and allow employees control over the resources they work with to emulate an entrepreneurial environment. With boosted accountability and control comes boosted success, Blodgett says, because it amplifies workers' investment in what they're producing.
