Wow these are all great tips in helping prepare one self for those interviews in may! This is deff a page I would like to review some more. One thing I would like to add that I didn't see focused on as much, is to do mock-interviews. If you have any family friend or relative of your parents that is in a managerial role that is somewhat current to your field, ask to sit down with them. A mock-interview lets you and the practice interviewee evaluate you, provide feedback and help you prepare more for the real deal. Using these tasks, along with this should deff fully prepare yourself for such.

I have read this article before and its always nice to have little tid bits like this before going on a job search. The moving thing is huge. Traveling with just you is one thing but bringing a family, especially if you have children is really something to look into. I really liked how they mentioned that even though you know the economy is bad that you can't just deal with the crap forever, sometimes you need to reevaluate things. I typically don't have a problem with going on job interviews, though I must confess that I have a hard time gauging whether the employer is interested in me just from the interview. I went on a job interview about three weeks ago and nailed the interview (or so I thought) only to never have the interviewer never call me back. I went on a second interview with a different employer one week later and I felt that I wasn't going to be hired, only to receive a call a week later informing me that I had received the job. At the least, you would think that the first interviewer would have had the courtesy to call me back.

I'm unemplyed. I left my position to focus on graduating this semester. My emplyer would not let me take the 18 hours of school that I needed in order to graduate so I weighed my option and left. And to be honest, other than not having income coming in, I'm quite happy with it. Right now, I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with my professional life. This article had some good tips on job hunting. I agree with all of them, but not all of them I will be comfortable doing. That actually leads into the tip of stepping out of your comfort zone. I find that I have no problem selling myself, seeing as though a good portion of that is fluff, but I am set in my roots for the time being and do not see myself moving outside of the state. For me to move out of the state it would have to be a set in stone deal that had ample benefits and rewards to offset my overall feeling of moving. I have been job searching for quite some time and have gotten bites from prospective employers, none of which I wish to work for. Most of these job searching tips are extremely easier said than done. I don't think any job could convince me to move out of Louisiana. Let alone, move out of my current city. No matter how great of an opportunity, I don't ever seeing myself re-locating for a job. It's also hard for people to step out of their comfort zones. As a staff auditor, I'm faced with a new challenge everyday; as opposed to accounting courses, when I was at least prepared for the exam covering a certain amount of information. The video resume will give allow a face to go with a name, prior to an interview and it will more than likely be more memorable as well.
I think it should be more than that, especially if you don't have a job. In that case, job hunting should be a full-time deal.This is very true because a lot of people get stuck in their ways and do not know how to adapt/get used to new things and ask questions. Asking questions is a very good way to gain information and make u a lot more wise.

I thought these were very useful and great tip for job searching. It is important that you follow these tips. I loved number two, Check yourself to make sure you haven't wrecked yourself. That is very true and helpful because in a lot of cases if you do not pay attention to what you are doing when searching for a particular job, you can wreck yourself.
I think when someone is on the "hunt" for the perfect job it should relate to real hunting. knowing your prey (job opportunities) and understanding the best places for the type of work they want to do. By doing so when they go for the "kill" they will have the best shot and give themselves an edge on the competition.

This is a good article to save for when I graduate. I have always used my connections to get jobs. I also am very persistent about apply for a job. I will call after I drop off my resume/application and if they tell me to call back I do. I have never really liked the whole online job thing. It just seems to impersonal. I know that is can be a great asset though. I am more the beat the street type of guy, relying more on my verbal and presentation skills, hopefully they serve me well when looking for a job.

One thing I would like to add that I didn't see focused on as much, is to do mock-interviews. If you have any family friend or relative of your parents that is in a managerial role that is somewhat current to your field, ask to sit down with them. A mock-interview lets you and the practice interviewee evaluate you, provide feedback and help you prepare more for the real deal. Using these tasks, along with this should deff fully prepare yourself for such.

ReplyDeleteI have read this article before and its always nice to have little tid bits like this before going on a job search. The moving thing is huge. Traveling with just you is one thing but bringing a family, especially if you have children is really something to look into. I really liked how they mentioned that even though you know the economy is bad that you can't just deal with the crap forever, sometimes you need to reevaluate things. Time to me is the most important thing they mentioned. You get what you give and if you only devote a small amount of time to searching you will not turn up with enough.

ReplyDeleteI went on a job interview about three weeks ago and nailed the interview (or so I thought) only to never have the interviewer never call me back. I went on a second interview with a different employer one week later and I felt that I wasn't going to be hired, only to receive a call a week later informing me that I had received the job. At the least, you would think that the first interviewer would have had the courtesy to call me back.
I found the article to be fresh and informative, expertly combining technical elements such as preparing the resume with internal factors (gauging the stability of the company) with external factors (change of geography, narrowing market, etc.). In this sense it went beyond the typical self assessment/resume crafting tips and explored the “why” as well as the “how” when considering to make the potential leap to another job.
The article "10 Job Search Tips for 2010" is extremely helpful and informative. I like the "know thyself" part because if you know who you are as a person then you will know what career path to take. The "sell yourself" part would be really hard for me. I do not like talking about shining moments or how wonderful I am, it even feels funny typing that. I guess after reading this article I need to work on my self confidence. This was a great article and I saved it to my favorites for future reference.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this video and found it very informative. I think the one part that I liked the most was the part when they discussed selling yourself. You have to make sure you make yourself as presentable as possible. With that you have to have the confidence to make sure that you are the person they want to hire and trust with all of the work they want to give you. I think if everyone were to think of an interview as selling yourself it would make the process a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteI think these were some very informative tips. I agreed most with the part about taking time to job hunt, and selling yourself. I think its very important to take the time to find exactly want you are looking for so you can be happy in your career. Dont just apply for anything because you need a job, no go for what you think will make you most happy so you wont have to worry about quitting or getting fired and landing yourself back at square one. People who are satisfied with their job are less stressed. When applying for a job make sure you give it your all. Sell your self like a brand and influence the company that if they higher you they are making a great choice.
ReplyDeleteI'm unemplyed. I left my position to focus on graduating this semester. My emplyer would not let me take the 18 hours of school that I needed in order to graduate so I weighed my option and left. And to be honest, other than not having income coming in, I'm quite happy with it. Right now, I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with my professional life. I'm deciding if I want to continue my career in Louisiana or venture out of state. I'm getting to know me and updating my resume in the process. Hopefully, this all works out! Wish me luck!
ReplyDeleteThis article had some good tips on job hunting. I agree with all of them, but not all of them I will be comfortable doing. That actually leads into the tip of stepping out of your comfort zone. I find that I have no problem selling myself, seeing as though a good portion of that is fluff, but I am set in my roots for the time being and do not see myself moving outside of the state. For me to move out of the state it would have to be a set in stone deal that had ample benefits and rewards to offset my overall feeling of moving. I have been job searching for quite some time and have gotten bites from prospective employers, none of which I wish to work for. I do think that once I have graduated job hunting will be more revealing, but out of all the tips, I think the biggest is that you have to make yourself stand out and the best way, I feel, to stand out is to obtain a higher education, above a bachelor's degree.

Some of these suggestions are things I know I would not do, but I do not think they are necessarily wrong. I think making yourself stand apart from the crowd it the best advice one can give on job searching.
ReplyDeleteMost of these job searching tips are extremely easier said than done. I don't think any job could convince me to move out of Louisiana. Let alone, move out of my current city. No matter how great of an opportunity, I don't ever seeing myself re-locating for a job. It's also hard for people to step out of their comfort zones. As a staff auditor, I'm faced with a new challenge everyday; as opposed to accounting courses, when I was at least prepared for the exam covering a certain amount of information. Not knowing what new project I will work on in the next couple of weeks is frustrating and creates anxiety since I can't jump ahead of myself.

They can help graduates to be more prepared when they start looking and interviewing for jobs. It's nice to know what to expect. One of the best tips is the one that basically says to know what you want and know yourself because if you don't know, you won't be able to market yourself to a potential employer on your job search very well.

I think it makes it more difficult if you're only searching in one area due to the amount of people in your community. i think there are a lot of jobs out there you just have to search for them.

It is very important that you have a resume up to date and ready to go. ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Again, I say this is for college students as well as high school students. You should be prepared to move. A lot of times, jobs require employees to be mobile. And sometimes, you might have to move to find a job. I know when I graduate, I plan on moving to Houston to get a good job and continue my education. And another tip that said get started searching... very true! You have to go look for the employers and show them you're interested. They won't come looking for you.

When I was job hunting last fall some of these tips, like tailoring my resume and selling my good points, came into play and I got the job. Many graduating seniors will be on the job hunt this May and I think the best tip is to tailor your resume to each position. Also, know a good bit of information about the companies you interview with.

ReplyDeleteI really like the tip about devoting time to job searching. One day I would like to be a high school teacher and coach. In coaching there is a underlying rule that they are always getting fired or looking for a new job. So you always have to be making contacts and coaching well against and opponents so you get your name and coaching style out there. I believe this works relatively the same in the business world. Not many people are completely in never getting a promotion, so they have to keep an eye out in the business world as well.
ReplyDeleteWe are actually studying very similar information in my Human Resource class. This article has a lot of good information about searching for jobs and getting yourself ready to apply. I think the most important step is to "know yourself" because when you are searching for a job you want to make sure it is something you will be happy doing. As I stated in my presentation on driving forces, happiness is the most important because happier people perform their jobs much better.

The tip that stuck out to me was the “devote your time to job searching” and “stepping out your comfort zone.” I am a procrastinator. I have not started job searching and this article made me realize that I have to begin now with graduation in the near future. Also, the stepping out of your comfort zone is hard for me to do. I find it hard to talk to new people and network. I must overcome my shyness.

ReplyDeleteThis was a pretty good article. It did have some useful information about job searching and not passing up a good opportunity. I think it is true that you always have to be on guard, and ready to make a move when a good opportunity comes your way. You always have to develop alternative plans, just in case the job you are at now doesn't go as planned. I think it is true that goals have to be realistic and achievable, and that the best way to sell yourself to an interviewer is to show your personality and confidence in your work.

ReplyDeleteThe "10 Job Search Tips for 2010" article was very helpful and interesting. My favorite tip was " Setp out of your comfort zone". This is very true because a lot of people get stuck in their ways and do not know how to adapt/get used to new things and ask questions. Asking questions is a very good way to gain information and make u a lot more wise. You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. Progress needs to be made everyday. We all have to use these tips to our benefit and make sure that we establish a good game plan that prepares us for our future.

How you act and are perceived in the interview is the most important part of the process, but getting to the interview is the hard part. Basic resume writing skills are necessary and not possessed by most people.

It's all about who you know #10 was the only helpful thing in this piece.... ReplyDeleteI thought these were very useful and great tip for job searching. It is important that you follow these tips. I loved number two, Check yourself to make sure you haven't wrecked yourself. That is very true and helpful because in a lot of cases if you do not pay attention to what you are doing when searching for a particular job, you can wreck yourself.
ReplyDeleteI think when someone is on the "hunt" for the perfect job it should relate to real hunting. knowing your prey (job opportunities) and understanding the best places for the type of work they want to do. By doing so when they go for the "kill" they will have the best shot and give themselves an edge on the competition.

ReplyDeleteThis is a good article to save for when I graduate. I have always used my connections to get jobs. I also am very persistent about apply for a job. I will call after I drop off my resume/application and if they tell me to call back I do. I have never even thought about using a video in my resume, but it sounds interesting and I bet I would definitely stand out! These are great tips and I can't wait to use them when I graduate.

ReplyDeleteThere are literally tons of resources availible to help someone find a job today. Someone in an earlier comment said make job hunting a 9-5 job until you get the job you want. Often way to many people are too relaxed about it. Start small and work your way up.

Alot of time people are hired with lesser qualifications than other candidates because they know people who work their or the owner. Having both a personal connection and using today's resources to be seen online helps advantage wise but people need to realize that because today is so advanced everyone has these resources.
