Can You Outsource EVERYTHING in Government?: Is a New Trend Starting in California?

Maywood CAImage via Wikipedia
Here's a VERY interesting development out of California (hey, isn't that where all trends really start?). And it is a trend that should scare the living bejesus out of any governmental worker at any level (hey, that includes me - OMG!). This is a story out of Maywood, California, a small community that has now outsourced EVERY CITY JOB - even the police and fire departments! Hey, radical times call for radical solutions - but can you see other communities - even states perhaps - make this a trend. We have already seen the federal government come to rely on contractors to a far greater extent than ever before, so will we see this - in all or in part - at the local and state levels as well.

Read about the Maywood, CA story in this article entitled, "City fires all staff, outsources everything," that comes to us via The New York Times and msnbc.com:
NYT: City fires all staff, outsources everything - U.S. news - The New York Times - msnbc.com

You can also watch a FoxBusiness story on the matter by clicking below:

So, whadya think? Post your comments on the blog and I'll do a follow-up posting that will feature them. In the meantime, by all means, share this blog post with your friends and family. It will especially "Make My Day" for them if they work for any local or state government!

The person interviewed about this situation does not give me enough information to evaluate this. It seems like they are taking an easy road out by having no employees and no pension. But in actuality, the gentleman states that they will be changing the government and things will look different once this is done. He states that sanctuary has run its course. The interviewer states that there is no money left but the gentleman states that is not true. I think there is more to hear from this story. This does sound like a desperate act. What about future concerns?

I agree with Lin, the guy getting interviewed definitely doesn’t provide us with enough information on how this should be interpreted. Although, I do think this video is crazy. I wonder if firing all government officials is even legal. No official employees, I don’t really understand who is making that decisions. That’s just a low blow. Recall procedure that’s going to take a few months is good because the people are taking action. What’s really disturbing is that the city people think their city council is pathetic and incapable of making good decisions.

The gentleman that was interviewed seemed to be a little confused, he didn't give complete answers to the questions he was asked. It's a little scary a city with no police, etc. who's running the show there?

This interview regarding Maywood, CA regarding”Sanctuary City” for illegal’s sounds like they have pushed their problems on to other cities. However, in part of the interview the city councilman did advise that it may be time to get rid of the "Sanctuary City" title all together. It sounds crazy to want to live in city that has no one person accountable for anything and no protection from police, fire Etc. It also was a little confusing that he advised that the number of people who are coming to this city and who are illegal’s are not the problem but that it was the people in charge. My question is who put them in charge?

I agree with J. It seems like they could have found someone else with a little more personality to explain their points. I don't understand who is making all of the important decisions or how they are able to stay afloat with the lack of organization.

As a general rule I think outsourcing is an excellent idea for some different reasons. By outsourcing services more small businesses will be created to supply the new demand.

Since the new business wants to prosper they have incentive to make sure they do the BEST job possible at the LOWEST cost possible. Government employees do not have the same incentive to do the BEST job, and they certainly don't have to worry about the LOWEST cost since there is ALWAYS more tax money available.

They keep harping on the fact they are a "Sanctuary City", which does raise costs. While it 'feels good' to hand out benefits to everyone who asks, in the "real world" it doesn't work very well.

Most small businesses don't have full pension plans like government jobs, which also GREATLY reduces the cost to taxpayers. While I can appreciate the desire to give workers full retirement for the rest of their lives, it is SO expensive that it would put most regular businesses out of business.

It gets to a point where people with jobs (that pay taxes)look at the people receiving benefits (at taxpayer expense) and decide they are paying too much in taxes and move. Did you know that there are people in New York currently paying almost 60% of their income in taxes? And with what is left they get to pay sales tax (another 8.75%) to get anything.

Seems like to me the man being interview is up to something. I just get a wierd vibe from his tone of voice, posture, and comments. He seems a bit confused about the whole situation.

This guy is not the best person to inerview for information on this subject. I feel this guy is a joke and they need to find a better spokesman for this situation.

Wow! I think people should begin to watch out because I feel a worldwide riot on its brinks.

I believe that sometime news channels pick the most interesting and controversial person to interview instead of someone who is actually informed on the subject being discussed. This is probably because the people who really know what is going on with city don't want to talk publically about it. I don't think that outsourcing these city positions is a "bad" idea. Nearby cities may be able to handle the issues better and faster since Maywood seems to be out of resources

Wow, government can just give up too. I wish someone a little more informative would have done the interview, but it really just seems they ran out of money and giving up.

I dont think outsourcing is a bad thing to an extent. I think a local government at least must have a governor and some kind of judge. I also want to say, if the guy interviewed is the level of intelligence in the town, outsourcing is the least of their problems. What an idiot.

I'm co-signing with some of the other posters in that more information is needed.

I'm wondering about the "sanctuary city" concept...what was the purpose behind that, how did it work, and how long had it been in place. Further, the councilman mentioned that the idea was spearheaded by one of the other members, who is still in a position of power. Hmmm, there had to be $$$ made somewhere down the line.

I can ask about twenty more questions on this thing...especially since the idea of outsourcing police employees had been toyed with in my neighbor city. I don't think people realize how dangerous it would be to outsource emergency personnel (police and fire). Wow! My brain is going 100 mph on this story.

Wow! Who picked this guy? He does not seem to know much about what happened or is going on in his own city. He did not answer the questions very well, and he seemed very uncomfortable. I don't think this will happen all over. How could every city outsource?

Unknown said...

I am in the same boat as everyone else, the man being interviewed barely answered his questions and did not give an explanation of what is really going on. I do not understand how you can fire all the officials though that doesn't seem legal. Also how did the city completely run out of money? Do they have corruption or just officials that are unfit to do their job?

Whitney said...

I can't believe there is a city with no police. That is just crazy! And apparently the guy in the interview has no idea what's going on. He doesn't have a complete explanation for anything he is asked!

Unknown said...

The video almost seems like a joke. Who picked this guy, he was lost, didnt have a clue of what was going on around him. With people like that on the city council, I can only imagine what kind of city Maywood is.

This almost sounds like this could become all of America. People are tired of the people in power making decisions that are not the will of the people. We should take everyone out of power of the US government.

How is he Mayor? I feel that he is hiding something. And how does a city run out of money. And housing many illegal people is crazy. Maybe they should just combined this city to the next and maybe work together to gain some revenue.

DLD said...

You can outsource everything apparently, they just did it. The problem comes in the form of civil servants such as fire, police, etc. These types of employees typically live in the cities in which they serve and therefore care more about their work and the job they do than the company it is being outsourced to. Seems like a fairly big risk. I think Fox hit the nail on the head though, they are broke because they freely choose to protect criminals. that being said, the police probably were not allowed to do much of anything effective anyhow. Outsource away.....

This is crazy i can see maybe outsourcing the police jobs to maybe the state police but for them to do it with every other job is crazy. If thats the case maybe they should join with a neighboring bigger city and drop their name.

I have to agree with many other post. Exactly who is this guy that is being interviewed? He really doesn’t seem to know too much and seems to be confused. However, I do believe that this pretty scary that government is being outsourced. Oh, and I really think we need police, it’s just crazy not to have them consider today’s society!!

The person being interviewed was pretty choppy in presenting his ideas concerning the matter. If there truly is no money to pay the city workers, then what are the alternatives? I don't know how large the town is, but outsourcing to neighboring cities doesn't sound like a good idea.
