From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 51 - ISSN: 1533-3698 April 21, 2011

Dear People:

I've watched the Human Resources role change over the past years and like where I see it headed. The more strategic HR role creates challenges, though. The challenge is always to provide seamless administrative functions such as benefits enrollment, benefits changes, and education while having enough time and energy to do the equally important, but more time and thought consuming, strategic tasks. Many reasons exist for why this remains challenging in HR. Busy work tasks are important and urgent and so they often win versus tasks that require thought and planning that are important but not urgent. An immediate employee need usually trumps longer term planning and larger projects, too. Many HR people I know work long hours at home where peace can prevail when the children are in bed. See more related to HR's many roles and vote in my poll. Which HR roles are the most important in your view?

Regards and wishing you and yours the best this weekend,

Susan

Believe What You See When Hiring

Have you ever made up your mind about a candidate based on the body language he exhibited in your lobby? How about that clammy, wet, limp handshake? Or, how do you react to the candidate with dirt under her fingernails when she folds her hands on your desk. I've learned to pay attention to nonverbal communication. It communicates loudly and wisely.

How to Understand Your Current Culture

It is difficult for people to assess and understand their own culture. When people are at work on a daily basis, many of the manifestations of culture become almost invisible. Assessing your organizational culture is a lot like trying to tell someone how to tie their shoes. Once you've been tying your own shoes every day for years and years, it is hard to describe the process to another person. But, you can with these tips...

Interviews & Employment

From Alison Doyle, your Guide to Job Searching
Job interviews aren't easy, even if you have gone on plenty of them. Here are tips on how to prepare for a job interview, how to impress the interviewer, and how to follow up after an interview.

Interview Questions and Answers
Job interviews are always stressful - even for job seekers who have gone on countless interviews. The best way to reduce the stress is to be prepared. Take the time to review the "standard" interview questions you will most likely be asked. Also review sample answers to these typical interview questions.

Types of Interview Questions
When you go on a job interview there are a variety of types of interview questions you'll be asked. You'll be asked about your employment history, your ability to work on a team, your leadership skills, your motivation, as well as interview questions related to your skills, abilities, and qualifications for the job.

Job Interview Etiquette
.Knowing proper job interview etiquette is an important part of successful interviewing. How you dress, what you bring to a job interview, how you greet the interviewer, and how you communicate can all make a big difference in the outcome of the interview.

Job Interview Follow Up
You have just left a job interview and it's a position you would love to be offered. What can you do next to help ensure that you get a second interview or a job offer? The most important thing you can do is to follow up to reiterate your interest in the position and to thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you.
