Succeed at Work

From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 71 - ISSN: 1533-3698 May 26, 2011

Dear People:

When I think about my favorite articles that I have written, especially for their ability to impact lives and minds, this day's article on rejection is high on my list. Everyone has to deal with rejection at work at one time or another. Below, I share my best thoughts about how to deal with rejection in a way that nurtures your spirit and makes you stronger.

A reader sent in an interesting question: "Why is it that the majority of companies no longer acknowledge the receipt of one's cover letter and resume? Nor do companies acknowledge the fulfillment of their position. In a culture where people complain about the lack of common courtesy, it seems that corporations and businesses are completely disregarding common courtesy. Is it no longer considered standard business policy to at least send an email response of some sort?" I responded and created a poll. How do you respond to applicants in your organization?

Do you know that I write a new blog post every day? Check out the blog in the center column on my home page.

Please forward this newsletter, in its entirety, to your colleagues, coworkers and friends, because you want to add value to their work and lives.

Regards and wishing you and yours the best this weekend,

Susan

The "Lake Wobegone" Market

A quick reminder that you should completely ignore analyst BUY and SELL ratings.

Catalpa Capital Advisorshas gone through all the analyst ratings on S&P 500 stocks that are found in Bloomberg, and averaged them together to find that a stunning percentage of stocks are seen as being BUYS or OUTPERFORMS.

According to Wall Street analysts, 92.6% of the companies in the S&P 500 Index are above average. Compared to the children in radio’s famed fictional town of Lake Wobegon, all of whom are above average, the stocks in the index come up short. But just barely.
