Welcome to your June 2011 Insider Update - the newsletter for readers of Inside Higher Ed. Once a month we send a quick rundown on what's happening at Inside Higher Ed: events, accomplishments and a bit of fun.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

An apparent dichotomy sparked lots of e-mail forwards in May. Dan Berrett’s article about a new survey finding that fine arts grads do better in the job market than one might think was our most e-mailed story, but Kevin Kiley’s coverage of a new study out of Georgetown U finding big income disparities depending on college major -- with engineering and business topping the salary charts -- was a close second. Dan’s story on the erosion of quality of life many faculty members are feeling was our most-read story last month. Readers posted the most to Scott Jaschik’s very brief article about a study finding that Democratic professors appear to be "more egalitarian" than their Republican counterparts when it comes to grading. And they’re off!

Closer to home, Scott, Doug, and some of our writing team will participate in the 2011 College Media Conference being co-hosted by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) here in D.C. June 29-July 1.

When the economy nosedived in the fall of 2008, many colleges created or enhanced retirement incentives, seeing them as one strategy to deal with a rapidly changing fiscal environment. Now, with the downturn approaching its third anniversary, many colleges are looking at their second or third rounds of retirement incentives and evaluating the success of previous efforts.

On Wednesday, June 22 at 1 p.m. Eastern, Inside Higher Ed presents Retirement Incentives and Higher Ed, a one-hour audio conference featuring Valerie Martin Conley, an Ohio University faculty member who is a leading expert in the field. Professor Conley will explore the current issues facing colleges and the academic employees who might consider retirement with the right incentives.

The program is ideal for human resources, academic affairs, finance and administration, and legal affairs officers as well as deans and department heads. Click here to register or for more information about this low-cost audio conference.
