| | The National Employment Law Project (NELP) reports significant cuts in unemployment benefits this year. In addition, to the elimination of federally funded extended benefits in the new debt ceiling legislation, there have been cuts in the maximum weeks of unemployment provided by state unemployment insurance and cuts in weekly benefit amounts. | | Cuts in State Unemployment Benefits Six states have cut the maximum number of weeks that jobless workers can receive unemployment compensation to below 26 weeks, which has been the standard for all states for over 50 years. Some states have cut weekly unemployment benefit amounts or increased eligibility requirements. | Cuts in Extended Unemployment Benefits Federal unemployment extensions were approved last year to cover extended benefits through 2011 providing up to 99 weeks of unemployment compensation. However, federal extended unemployment benefits are not included in the new debt ceiling bill and will expire at the end of this year unless new legislation is passed to continue extended benefits coverage. | Unemployed?
