Dear People:
Are you the victim of a layoff or downsizing? Have you taken a period of time off of work for any reason? Or, do you plan to take time away from the world of work? In any of these instances, you'll create an employment gap, and they can be quite scary when you try to return to work. With sales down, companies continue to cut expenses, and people are still losing their jobs. In October, something like 80,000 new jobs were created, but this is far below what is needed to put Americans on the road to full employment. In this employment market, replacing a good job is difficult and time consuming. And, don't give up your job search during the long holiday season. (I get to talk about the holidays since the stores are full of red and Santas and a friend has already begun her holiday decorating.) But, you do need to be prepared to explain the gap in your employment. If you have time, these tips will help you minimize the impact of an employment gap, too. That's not always possible in a layoff situation, but the negative impact of planned time off work can be mitigated with the use of these tips. Employment gaps matter.
