Dear People:

Teams and team work remain challenges and the content of many reader questions. This week, a reader asked about dividing his group of 12 reporting staff members, who are currently segmented into teams based on the technology that they specialize in, into four or five process-based teams led by a team leader. On the surface, I think that the reader was looking for a model, but I gave him the same advice that I would give to any manager who wanted to change his or her departmental structure and its focus. People become invested in their traditional ways of doing things. Consequently, any effort to change or reorganize the method used to accomplish work can be threatening and disturbing to employees.
