European finance ministers were locked in debate Tuesday over a contentious financial transactions tax amid resistance from Britain. The ministers also approved a freeze on almost 500 million euros in grants to Hungary.

UK police have arrested six people as part of an investigation into phone hacking of voice mail messages by journalists at British newspapers. Rebekah Brooks, a one-time executive at News International, was among them.

German police raided over 30 homes across four states on Tuesday in a crackdown on far-right extremists and neo-Nazi supporters. More than 20 people were arrested in the dawn swoops.

Germany and Pakistan sign deal on military cooperation
Germany and Pakistan have sealed a deal that will see both countries' armed forces work together more closely. German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere was in the city of Rawalpindi as part of a tour of the region.

The leader of France's anti-immigration National Front appears set to enter the presidential race after obtaining the minimum required endorsements. This could be bad news for the incumbent, Nicolas Sarkozy.

German central bank reports lower profits
Germany's central bank has confirmed earlier estimates that its 2011 profit has fallen sharply. It attributed the decrease in earnings to the impact of the eurozone's continued debt crisis.
