BATTERED Isaac claimed its first American life on Thursday after a tow truck driver was killed clearing debris from the storm in Mississippi. Isaac was downgraded to a tropical storm on Thursday, but the slow-moving storm refused to let up on the Louisiana coast as flooding trapped residents in their homes and on levees. Worst affected is Plaquemines Parish, outside New Orleans, where National Guardsmen and residents rescued dozens who were trapped in their homes after a levee overtopped. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal warned there is “much more coming” as the rain and the winds are expected to last through Friday and upwards of 300,000 are still without power in the Southeast. FACT-CHECKING Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan pushed politics into new territory with his convention speech, daring Democrats and the media to call him out on his string of falsehoods, writes The Daily Beast’s Michael Tomasky. DENIED A federal court in Washington on Thursday struck down a Texas law that made photo identification a requirement to voting. The three-judge panel ruled that the law statute imposes “strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor.” The ruling also noted that the law would disproportionately affect minorities, who are more likely to not possess a driver’s license or passport. The same federal courthouse will decide on a challenge to South Carolina’s new photo-ID law, which went on trial this week and a decision is expected before the November election. A similar law in Pennsylvania was recently upheld. Strict voter-ID laws have become something of a rallying cry of conservatives this election cycle. NEWS OF THE WORLD The former legal manager for the now-defunct tabloid the News of the World was arrested Thursday in the ongoing phone-hacking investigation. Tom Crone, 60, is being held on suspicion of intercepting communications. A source at News International, the British wing of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., said Crone’s arrest followed information that was passed to police from the company Management and Standards Committee. When Murdoch appeared before the Leveson Inquiry last year, he alleged of a cover-up at News International and implicated Crone, although Crone denied the claim. | |
