President Bashar Assad's regime has dropped cluster bombs on rebels and population centers, according to Human Rights Watch. The Syrian government has been fighting to recapture a town that links Damascus to Aleppo.

According to early exit polls, austerity-weary Lithuanians have voted to remove the incumbent center-right government. The center-left Social Democrats had promised to raise the minimum wage and hike taxes on the rich.

Five British Marines charged with murder in Afghan death
Five of Britain's elite Royal Marines have been charged with murder over a death in southern Afghanistan. They are the first UK troops to be charged with murder there since deployments began in 2001.

Parliamentary polls have opened in the small Adriatic state of Montenegro, with the ruling party tipped to win for the third time in a row. The Balkan country has faced an economic slowdown after years of growth.

Northern Nigeria mosque attack kills 20 worshippers
Armed assailants have gunned down a group of Muslim worshippers outside a mosque in Nigeria. Authorities have said the perpetrators were part of a criminal gang.

Chinese book prize winner hits out at East and West
The dissident Chinese author Liao Yiwu has picked up the German Book Trade Peace Prize at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In his speech, the writer took aim not only at the Chinese government but also the business-minded West.

Israel court hands private Kafka collection to state library
A court in Israel has ordered that the literary estate of a friend of Czech writer Franz Kafka be transferred to the country's national library. The collection, which had been kept in banks, includes unpublished works.
