German court fines policeman in death of asylum seeker
A German court has handed down a fine to a policeman found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of an asylum seeker. Oury Jalloh died of smoke inhalation in a prison cell after setting fire to his mattress.

Ukraine re-elects Mykola Azarov as prime minister
Ukraine's Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has won another term in office hours after lawmakers brawled in the parliament chamber. The fight broke out while choosing a new speaker from President Yanukovich's ruling party.

European human rights court rules on El-Masri rendition case
Europe's top human rights court has ruled in favor of Khaled El-Masri, a German man who was kidnapped and taken to a CIA prison in Afghanistan. The court said the man was tortured and repeatedly had his rights violated.

Japan scrambles fighters, claiming airspace violation
Japan has said for the first time that China violated its airspace as part of the countries' ongoing islet dispute in the East China Sea. Government officials have said they scrambled air force jets; no shots were fired.

Eurogroup releases Greek aid tranche
The eurozone finance ministers have given the green light to disbursing the next installment in the Greek aid package, ending weeks of discussions. The money will help Greece stay afloat into next year.

German Ifo think tank sees economy picking up in 2013
Germany's renowned Ifo institute has insisted the country's economy would expand again as early as next spring, following a brief contraction period. It says domestic and extra-European demand will prevent a recession.
