Syrian Regime fights for lost territory
Fierce fighting has taken hold in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The violence is the result of a major push by President Bashar Assad to reclaim lost territory, as doubts over the future of his regime future mount.

Last French combat troops leave Afghanistan
The last French combat troops have left Afghanistan. This comes two years before a deadline for all NATO combat forces to withdraw, and was hastened by inside attacks and a change of power in Paris.

Police identify suspect in Bonn train station bomb plot
German police have identified a suspect in relation failed bombing attempt at a train station in Bonn, media have reported. He has not been named.
World Cup
FIFA finds evidence of pre-World Cup match-fixing
A FIFA report has found "compelling evidence" of match-fixing in games involving host South Africa ahead of the 2010 World Cup. The country had asked FIFA to investigate after a string of suspicious matches.
