The individual is not only best qualified to provide his own personal defense, he is the only one qualified to do so. David Mamet writes in Newsweek on our constitutional right to bear arms.

NASTY NEIGHBORS

Hey, North Korea, pick an enemy. The country directed its threats toward South Korea on Friday, one day after vowing to launch a rocket at the U.S. as part of "all out" action against its "sworn enemy." In a statement by the wing of the government that manages the relationship with the South, North Korea called United Nations–endorsed sanctions a "declaration of war" and said things could get worse on the peninsula should the South continue its actions. Although North Korea did not give any clues as to what action it would take against the South, many worry that the two Koreas are coming closer to a full-scale war.

LONG WAY TO GO

Just what the airline industry needs in the dead of winter. U.S. regulators inspecting the now grounded Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft said Thursday that they would need more time—stoking fears that aircraft's grounding could be even longer. While the investigators have found "symptoms" of what caused the Jan. 7 battery fire in Boston, the underlying cause still remains a mystery, said Deborah Hersman, the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board. Calling the Dreamliner mishaps an "unprecedented event," Hersman refused to answer questions about how long the investigation could take. The 787 has been grounded worldwide since two fires abroad aircraft in Japan and the incident in Boston, all of which occurred earlier this month.

YIKES

Britain's economy continued to shrink in the fourth quarter, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics on Friday, meaning that the country could be headed for an unprecedented "triple dip" recession. The country's gross domestic product shrank 0.3 percent in the final quarter of 2012, with the economy still below its September 2011 levels and smaller by 3.3 percent than in 2008. Sterling fell Friday to its lowest levels against the euro in over a year, and output by Britain's manufacturing sector dropped by 1.5 percent in the quarter and 1.8 percent for the year as a whole. Britain entered a recession in September 2011, but briefly rallied earlier this year, buoyed by the London Olympics and the queen's Diamond Jubilee.
