Still Plunging

A mad Washington scramble went into overtime in the predawn hours of New Year's Day as the Senate voted to avoid a tax hike on people making less than $400,000—even after the country had technically slid off the much-feared fiscal cliff. The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz on how the deal came together—and why it's sadly the best Washington can do. Plus, Dan Gross on the downside for deficit hawks, Michael Tomasky on the Southern roots of obstructionism, and more coverage of the fiscal cliff.

Dealmaker

He played a key role in negotiating the fiscal-cliff deal—and he did the same thing with Afghanistan, gay marriage, and more. The Daily Beast's Michelle Cottle on how Joe Biden should get some respect.

The Hermit Kingdom

Is Kim Jong-un taking the whole "new year, new slate" thing a little too seriously? The North Korean leader cited improving the economy and improving relations with South Korea as his two primary policy goals for the New Year. In his New Year address on Tuesday, Kim called creating an "economic giant" the "most important task" and stated that "the reunification of the country is the greatest national task that brooks no further delay." Park Geun Hye, the president-elect of South Korea, has previously stated her willingness to talk to Kim and make efforts to thaw ties with the North. North Korea's economy is about one-fortieth the size of South Korea's and two-thirds of its population suffers from malnutrition.

More details emerged Monday on the blood clot that caused Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to be admitted to New York Presbyterian Hospital Sunday evening. The clot is reportedly located "in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull." Despite the unsettling location of the clot, doctors assured the nation that Clinton will make a "full recovery" and that she is "making excellent progress." The blood clot is related to a concussion she suffered earlier this month, sparking rumors that she had feigned the fall to avoid congressional hearings on the attacks in Benghazi, Libya.

Tragic

Seven charity workers, six of whom were women, have been shot to death in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday. A male colleague was also killed when their vehicle was hit by gunfire near a center run by Pakistani charity Ujala in the Swabi district. The vehicle's driver was also injured in the attack. The district police chief said, "Four men came on two motorbikes. They attacked their van. They opened fire to the right and left of the van and fled on their motorbikes." No one has claimed responsibility for the killings. Last month, nine health workers were killed while participating in a national polio-vaccination drive.
