It doesn't really matter how the Supreme Court rules on the cases it's hearing this week. In the future, gay marriage will not only be legal, but practically mandatory, writes The Daily Beast's Megan McArdle, because it has already won in the court of public opinion. Plus, read the transcript and listen to audio from today's arguments on Prop 8, and Eliza Shapiro answers six key questions about the cases, how they got to where they are, and what's at stake.

PERSONHOOD

North Dakota became the country's most restrictive state on abortion rights Tuesday, approving a ban on the procedure as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. Gov. Jack Dalrymple signed the new legislation, in addition to another measure that makes North Dakota the first state to ban abortions based on genetic defects like Down syndrome. The measures are partly an attempt to close the state's sole abortion clinic in Fargo, but State Rep. Kathy Hawken (R-Fargo) is leading the charge against them. "I'm personally pro-choice, but you can't make that decision for anyone else," she said. In an article on The Daily Beast, Hawken slammed her state for being "poised to win the state-by-state race to the bottom on women's health."

MONKEYING WITH THE FACTS?

Last week famed primatologist Jane Goodall was found to have plagiarized parts of her new book, but a deeper look reveals a work plagued by rampant copying, obvious errors, and ominous junk science. The Daily Beast's Michael Moynihan surveys Goodall's error-filled new tome, Seeds of Hope.

Not So Fast

Mark Kelly had a grand plan to make a political point about gun control. Now, that plan is thwarted. The former astronaut and husband of Rep. Gabby Giffords purchased an AR-15—which he didn't plan on keeping—earlier this month to prove how easy it is to buy an assault weapon. After the purchase, he planned to turn the gun over to the police. After learning of Kelly's plans, the store owner has now canceled the transaction. Since his statements made it clear that the purchase was for reasons other than personal use, "I determined that it was in my company's best interest to terminate this transaction," store owner Doug MacKinlay said.
