EXPOSED

Two years after the release of the Guantánamo files, a documentary is shedding new light on Julian Assange's controversial company. James Ball—an ex-WikiLeaks employee and one of the documentary's subjects— gives The Daily Beast an inside look at what happened behind the scenes.

LOCKED AND LOADED

Just days after the European Union allowed its embargo on weapons transfers into Syria to expire, President Bashar al-Assad spoke out to confirm that Russia had delivered the missiles it had promised. "Syria has received the first shipment of Russian anti-aircraft S-300 rockets," Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar quotes him as saying. Russia transported the weapons despite widespread objection, especially from France, which launched an investigation into Syria's potential use of chemical weapons on Monday. The White House openly denounced Russia's vow to send weapons to Syria this week as well, with press secretary Jay Carney calling it a step in the wrong direction.

REBEL ROUSER

After slipping off to Syria over the weekend and urging a greater U.S. military role in the ongoing crisis, Republican Sen. John McCain is back to picking fights with his colleagues. Amid a GOP identity crisis, an aging senator's independent stands may not mean as much for the party as they once did. By Eleanor Clift.

JUSTICE

The man who has been accused of using a cleaver to behead a British soldier in broad daylight on May 22 in London has been charged with murder. A 22-year-old from southeast London, Michael Adebowale was indicted shortly after being released from the hospital—where he was being treated for a gunshot wound inflicted when police arrived on the scene. The investigation into who else participated in the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby is ongoing, with police holding several other suspects in custody. The incident remains shrouded in mystery as reports that the killer's accomplice, Michael Adebolajo, 28, was once recruited by the United Kingdom's domestic counter-intelligence agency MI5.

bipartisanship

President Obama has plans to nominate former senior Justice Department official James B. Comey—who served under President George W. Bush—as director of the FBI, according to sources close to the selection process who spoke to the New York Times. Comey is a former hedge-fund executive and a Republican, making his appointment a strong message of bipartisanship. He met with Obama about the position in early May, though it is still unknown when Obama will announce the nomination. The current director, Robert Mueller, will leave his post at the beginning of September.
