BIG BAD OBAMACARE

Why are they so afraid of Obamacare? Because it might actually work—and they're coping the only way they know how: by scaring the hell out of everyone, says Jon Favreau.

SHOCKER

Anybody think this wouldn't happen? In a two-hour session in the basement of the Capitol on Wednesday to hash out their position, House Republicans overwhelmingly came down against the Senate-passed immigration bill. The Senate bill is loaded with compromises to attract Republican support, including a new border fence and massive security deployment, but that wasn't enough for GOP members of Congress, who released a joint statement saying the Obama administration "cannot be trusted to deliver on its promises to secure the border." Speaker John Boehner warned of the high political price the party could pay for obstructing a bipartisan bill, but the dominant faction in the House said they would not consider anything close to the Senate version.

AMERICAN GRUB

While heart-healthy diets are ridiculed as "no fun" or extreme, the medical community pushes more pharmaceuticals and costly invasive cardiac treatments. Neither are working, says Dr. Daniela Drake.

Investigation

More testimony from the crew is shedding light on the final minutes before the crash of an Asiana Airlines jet in San Francisco on Saturday. After the plane skidded to a stop on the runway, two flight attendants asked the three pilots what to do and were told to delay evacuation procedures. Then another flight attendant, who was seated just in front of the wing, saw fire out the plane's window. Other details that emerged from the investigation include that the pilot told the airport's tower that he was blinded by a mysterious flash of light from in front of the plane just before the crash. Two flight attendants were trapped by the plane's emergency exit doors when they deployed automatically; the attendants were freed, but were injured.

PROTEST

California prison inmates said the state is threatening to search their cells and place them in solitary confinement in retaliation for their hunger strike, now in its third day, to protest the deplorable conditions in the state's notoriously overcrowded, underfunded prisons. Around 29,000 inmates are still refusing meals after the strike began on Monday to raise awareness of excessive solitary confinement, poor food quality, and lack of educational and rehabilitation programs. Prisoners also said officials had threatened to withhold their mail, refuse visitors, and subject them to rules violations that would affect their parole.
