HOT CITIES

Call them aspirational cities, or magnets of opportunity, but the urban areas attracting today's ambitious citizens are most likely Southern, culturally vibrant, modest sized, long on jobs, and short on traffic. From Austin to Nashville, Joel Kotkin and Wendell Cox explain their new rankings.

ISRAEL-PALESTINE

Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday that Israel and Palestine will launch formal peace negotiations in the next two weeks with the goal of establishing a "final status" plan for an independent Palestinian state within nine months. Kerry made the announcement after representatives from the two governments met Monday and Tuesday in Washington for the first time in five years. "It's no secret that this is a difficult process. If it were easy, it would have happened a long time ago," Kerry said, describing the meeting as a "new moment of possibility." Some of the issues that remain to be addressed are as thorny as ever, particularly whether or how to divide Jerusalem to create a Palestinian capital.

DISTRACTED

Don't talk and drive. The conductor of a Spanish train that going twice the speed limit when it crashed, killing 79 people, was talking on the phone. A Spanish court says the train's black-box data recorder shows the conductor talking on the phone with a rail company official and consulting a paper document when the train went off the rails. The train had been going as fast as 119 miles per hour, but the conductor applied the brakes "seconds before the crash," bringing the speed down to 95, still almost twice the speed limit. The conductor has been provisionally charged with negligent homicide.

SMART TV

The pitch for Google's new gadget Chromecast is simple. It's "the easiest way to watch online video on your TV." The Daily Beast's Brian Ries plugs in the $35 device and reports back.

EVASIVE

It's been several days since the news broke that Weiner continued sending dick pics to women after he resigned from Congress, but it took the Daily News to ask the obvious question: so, are you still sending dick pics to women? Weiner's answer is, well, not particularly reassuring. "You can quibble about beginnings, middles, and ends, but what we're talking about is over a year ago," Weiner said. Unfortunately, the News didn't quibble about what Weiner meant—did he stop sexting Sydney Leathers a year ago or stop sexting period? Has the end even happened yet? Yesterday a Quinnipiac poll found that Weiner's support had plummeted to 16 percent among Democrats, and 53 percent of respondents said he should drop out.
