Today: Thousands Mark March On Washington , 50 Years of the Civil-Rights Movement—in 10 Charts , Report: Douglas & Zeta-Jones Separated

LOW POINT

If Miley Cyrus wanted us to talk about her VMA performance for three days…well, it worked. As the former Disney star capitalizes on her infamy with a new song called "Twerk," The Daily Beast's Tunku Varadarjan ponders what the hubbub says about American civilization. Have we hit rock bottom?

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

Thousands of people descended on the National Mall on Wednesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. The crowd gathered in the nation's capitol even in heavy rain waving signs that read "The new Jim Crow must go" and "50 years later still fighting to vote." Nearly five hours of speeches are planned to mark the event, including appearances by Oprah Winfrey, President Barack Obama, and former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Rep. John Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia who is the only surviving speaker from the 1963 march, is also scheduled to speak.

ANNIVERSARY
In the half century since "I Have a Dream," African-Americans have made some great strides in education, political representation, and voter turnout. In other areas, it's like nothing has changed at all. As the nation marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, this data shows how far we've come.
SPLITSVILLE

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have decided to separate, People reported on Wednesday. The couple, who have been married for almost 13 years, have not filed for divorce or legal separation yet, but sources told the magazine that they are spending time apart. In the past few years, Douglas battled cancer (he said he contracted HPV from oral sex), Zeta-Jones has been hospitalized for bipolar disorder, and Douglas's son from his first marriage, Cameron, was sentenced to five years in prison for drug possession (and later an additional four and a half years for possessing drugs in prison). "The stress has taken a toll on their marriage," a friend said. Douglas and Zeta-Jones have two children together: Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10.

RAWR

I see Paris, I see France, I see Vladimir Putin's underpants. A provocative painting featuring Russia's president in a tight-fitting slip was removed from a gallery in St. Petersburg on Wednesday after it was deemed illegal. The image, which also depicts Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in women's underwear, breaks a law in Russia that bans the spread of "gay propaganda." The owner of the Russian gallery, Alexander Donskoy, said the police shut down his business without a warrant. "We have been given no formal documents banning us from operating and no receipt confirming our petty cash was seized."
