'FRIEND TO TYRANTS'

The senator promised to respond to the Russian president's New York Times op-ed—and he has with a blistering piece in Pravda, calling Putin a corrupt autocrat who cozies up to tyrants like Assad.

BACK TO WORK

Washington, D.C.'s Navy Yard returned to semi-normal Thursday morning, reopening at 6 a.m. for what officials said would be a "normal workday" after 12 people were killed in a shooting there Monday. Only Building 197, where the shooting happened, and the base gym, which is being used as a staging area for the FBI investigation, will remain closed. Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered a security review of all the country's military bases to prevent officials from missing "red flags," as they may have in this case.

'COMING OUT'

The campaign video of Carl Sciortino 'coming out' to his conservative father has gone viral. Gay? No problem. Liberal? Outrageous. By Ben Jacobs.

Too good to be true? "We have never pursued or sought a nuclear bomb, and we are not going to do so," Iran's new president, Hassan Rouhani, said in an interview with NBC. Rouhani also said that his country should have the ability to seek "peaceful nuclear technology." The new leader has wasted no time in showing his more moderate side—he tweeted wishes for a blessed Rosh Hashanah earlier this month and also ordered the release of political prisoners. Rouhani is pushing for engagement with the West to ease crippling sanctions and told NBC he and President Obama have exchanged "positive and constructive" letters.

RESCUED

A 14-year-old girl snatched from her home in suburban Atlanta Tuesday was found alive, police said Thursday, though they wouldn't say anything more about their investigation. She was taken after armed robbers broke into her home, shot the family dog, and demanded money and jewelry. The girl has been returned to her family, and two suspects are in custody, though police say they haven't established a motive in the kidnapping.
