KENYA MALL ATTACK

The bloody siege continues at a luxury mall in Nairobi where 59 were gunned down and dozens are still captive. The Daily Beast's Margot Kiser talks to Kenyans who say they're shocked—but not surprised—by the terror. Plus, The Daily Beast's Eli Lake on the rise of al-Shabaab, the terror group behind the deadly shootout, and photos from the attack.

VICTIMS

The wife of a U.S. diplomat has been killed in the Kenya terrorist attack and several U.S. citizens were wounded, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry confirmed on Sunday. Kerry said the woman killed was the wife of a U.S. diplomat working for the U.S. Agency for International Development. There were several foreigners among the dead: France said two of its citizens were killed, along with two Canadians, and a Chinese woman. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, meanwhile, said his close family members were among the dead.

THE TIME IS NOW

President Obama on Saturday night said it's time to "go back at it" to find crack down on gun control after deadly shootings at the Washington Navy Yard and in Chicago. "We fought a good fight earlier this year, but we came up short, and that means we've got to get back up and go back at it," Obama told the Congressional Black Caucus, to applause. Obama had made gun control a priority after the Newtown shooting in December killed 20 children, but Congress had rejected his proposal to restrict certain types of guns and require more background checks. Since then, gun control has largely slipped out of the president's public agenda.

JUSTICE

Disgraced former Chinese politician Bo Xilai, once a top party boss, was found guilty Sunday of bribery, embezzlement, and abuse of power and was sentenced to life in prison. Bo has been accused of helping cover up the murder of British businessman Neil Haywood by his wife, who has been convicted of Haywood's murder. Bo maintained his innocence at his trial and insisted his confession had come after torture. He still has the right to appeal his sentence. The all-power Chinese politburo removed Bo from power last year, and he has been stripped from political rights for life.

SUNDAY BETS

It's time to celebrate TV's top-shelf shows and performances again, with the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards airing Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. Neil Patrick Harris is back as host, and it's a safe bet he won't be the only returning face on the Emmy stage: voters tend to cast their ballots for familiar favorites year after year. With that in mind, The Daily Beast's Jason Lynch went through 25 categories and picked the likely winners—along with the nominees he wishes could really take home the trophy.
