Wall Street Glances Wearily at Washington If everyone in the world is in near-universal agreement that Congress should end this impasse and raise the debt limit by October 17, maybe Congress should start listening? Just a thought. European shares and oil opened weakly on Monday as the yen rose while many investors sought safer assets. "This feels a lot like Sunday night on Lehman weekend," said Westwood Capital Managing Partner Daniel Alpert. The government currently has $30 billion in cash in the bank with a little more room to borrow. But if an agreement isn't reached by Thursday, the U.S. will reach its debt limit—that means no more borrowing. Read it at Reuters Terrorism 3. The Wrong Terrorist? The U.S. government has described Abu Anas al-Liby, who was snatched during a raid in Libya, as the mastermind behind al-Qaeda's 1998 embassy bombings. In the aftermath of his capture, the Libyan prime minister was kidnapped amid a wave of anger at the American intervention on Libyan soil. The Daily Beast's Jamie Dettmer sat down with al-Liby's family in their cramped apartment in Tripoli this weekend -- he was told that U.S. counter-terrorism officials had made a terrible mistake. Somali Pirate 'Big Mouth' Captured Maybe he was trying to get an early ticket to go see Captain Phillips. Notorious Somali pirate Mohamed Abdi Hassan, known as "Afweyne" or "Big Mouth," has been detained in Belgium, local media reported Monday. Hassan was detained Saturday in Brussels after arriving on a flight from Nairobi, Belga news agency reported. Despite having been named by the United Nations as "one of the most notorious and influential leaders" of Somalia's pirates, Hassan had said earlier this year that he would be retiring after eight years—and he urged other pirates to do the same. But retirement or not, Hasan has been linked to the 2008 capture of the Saudi-owned Sirius Star oil tanker, and the 134-day hijack of the Ukrainian transport ship MV Faina in 2008. Read it at AFP WTF 5. Dry Ice Bomb Explodes at LAX Sounds like a fourth-grade science experiment gone wrong. A "dry ice bomb," or a plastic bottle filled with dry ice, exploded in a bathroom at Los Angeles International Airport Sunday night, causing delays, but luckily no injuries. An employee reported hearing an explosion around 7 p.m. in the Terminal 2, Gate 27 restroom, and discovered the bottle. LAPD's bomb squad arrived to investigate, and cleared the area with normal operations resuming around 9 p.m. The investigation has been turned over to the FBI.
