Debt Deal

Congress is heaving a sigh of relief over a reported deal to avert a default—but the crisis is nowhere near ended. The Daily Beast's David Frum on why the ruthless politics won't stop until the larger crisis in American life finds some resolution. Plus, Caitlin Dickson on the Oath Keepers, the organization rooting for the collapse.

Proliferation

As Iran and the West launch the latest round of nuclear talks, relations between Washington and Tehran are the warmest in decades. The Daily Beast's Michael Adler reports from Geneva on what Rouhani and Obama want—and whether we'll finally see a deal.

WELCOME TO AMERICA

Hope you like our justice system. Abu Anas al-Liby, the Libyan man the U.S. kidnapped from Libya last week and accused of being responsible for a 1998 attack on two U.S. embassies in Africa, arrived in New York, where he could be arraigned as early as Tuesday. Al-Liby had originally set to have been held at sea for some time while U.S. interrogators debriefed him, but he required specialized medical attention (al-Liby's wife told The Daily Beast that he has Hepatitis C). Al-Liby and his family have maintained his innocence in the attacks on the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed 225.

WTF

Are dry ice bombs a thing now? Four dry ice bombs—two of which exploded—were found at LAX since Sunday, as investigators scrambled to figure out how they could have gotten in the airport in the first place. Dry ice bombs are literally a bottle with dry ice inside, but it's deadly serious—and the suspects arrested could even be tried in federal court. A dry ice bomb exploded in the men's room in a section accessible only to employees at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, police said. Two similar devices were found in the area. The three devices were found just one day after another dry ice bomb exploded in a men's room Sunday night.

DAMAGE

An estimated 73 people were killed Tuesday when a 7.3.-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines—and several historic buildings and churches have been damaged beyond repair. At least 57 people were confirmed dead in Bohol, an area known for its sandy beaches. In the metropolitan hub of Cebu, 15 people were killed, including five people killed port collapsed and three who died a stampede at a sports complex. Churches, bridges, and roads were also damaged, including structures that dated back to the Spanish colonial period in the 1500s-1600s. President Bengino Aquino is expected to visit the affected areas on Wednesday.
