Easy Victory

Fearing an expensive lost cause, the national party took a pass on Tuesday's election for New Jersey governor. But the decision to stay out may come back to haunt Democrats in 2016. The Daily Beast's Patricia Murphy reports.

SUICIDE

The man suspected of opening fire at a New Jersey mall Monday night was found dead early Tuesday from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Richard Shoop, 20, of Teaneck New Jersey, allegedly fired his weapon at least six times in the Westfield Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus, causing the mall to go on lockdown—with about 400 people inside. There have been no reports of injuries. Police found Shoop's body around 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday, and have found a suicide note at Shoop's home. The suspect had been known to local police for his alleged drug use, including MDMA or molly.

TERRIFYING

Denver police arrested two armed juveniles who allegedly broke into a middle school late Monday night, believed to be carrying long rifles. The suspects were nabbed after a three-hour "cat-and-mouse" game, and were not armed. The overnight janitors at the Noel Middle School called police after noticing the break-in, and officers called in the bomb squad after noticing the men were carrying backpacks. Police attempted to communicate with the men via the school's PA system. It's still unclear if the school will be open Tuesday.

TIED UP

Your move, John Boehner. President Obama on Monday praised the Senate for passing a bill that would make it illegal for employers to discriminate based on sexual orientation. "Slowly, surely, we're starting to see some common sense starting to prevail," Obama told a group of donors at an Organizing for Action fundraiser. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act passed the Senate 61-30 on Monday, but it could get tied up in the House—especially since Boehner is opposed to the bill. The president on Monday urged the House to follow the Senate's bipartisan lead, but he acknowledged that change in America has "always been slow." Also, since when did six Republicans and every Democrat become "bipartisan"?

States of Disunion

Voters in a corner of Colorado will vote Tuesday on whether to secede from the state. The movement will fail, but the underlying discord in American politics is only going to grow, writes The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky.
