SAINT VLAD

Missing the days when gays stayed in the closet and Christianity reigned, leaders of the old right in America have embraced Vladimir Putin as the world's foremost defender of "traditional values," The Daily Beast's James Kirchick writes. It's ironic that the former vanguard of a worldwide communist atheist revolution is now the object of affection from the likes of Pat Buchanan.

WATCH YOUR BACK

With the fight for Fallujah, al Qaeda has roared back to life in Iraq—a scenario that could easily repeat itself in Afghanistan and Pakistan if the U.S. isn't careful. The Daily Beast's Bruce Riedel writes that without a forceful and preemptive policy, al Qaeda could surge into the nuclear-armed country where Bin Laden was hiding.

PATTERN?

The scandal over the George Washington Bridge has forced Chris Christie to apologize for his office breaking the public trust, but Bridgegate may not be the first troublesome case involving Christie as a public servant. The Daily Beast's Samuel Kleiner writes about when the then-U.S. Attorney allegedly used "deferred prosecution" agreements to steer no-bid contracts worth millions of dollars to favored attorneys. Is Bridgegate just a different side of the same Christie coin?

A Step Back

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan signed a new anti-gay bill into law Monday, strengthening the country's crackdown against homosexuals. The new legislation criminalizes same-sex "amorous relationships" and membership in gay-rights groups. People who "enter into a same-sex marriage or civil unions" are liable to be punished by as much as 14 years in jail. While sub-Saharan Africa tends to hold strongly anti-gay attitudes, the West's threats to cut aid have curtailed anti-gay legislation in Uganda and Malawi. However, Nigeria's $2-million-barrel-per-day-oil output had made the country immune to such external pressure.

MOVING ON

In a blow to anti-abortion activists, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from Arizona asking to reinstate a state law that banned most abortions after 20 weeks. As is the custom, there was no reason offered by the justices. The law was enacted in 2012 and prohibited abortions except in medical emergencies, which were narrowly defined. About a dozen other states have laws that ban most abortions after 20 weeks.
