Cheat Sheet - Inside Philip Seymour Hoffman's Apartment

Cheat Sheet: Morning

February 03, 2014
LEFT BEHIND

Flashbulbs greeted Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman on Sunday, not on the red carpet but on a gurney. Michael Daly reports Hoffman, 46, died with a syringe in his arm and his family around the block. When the terrible news came, the mother of Hoffman's kids ran to the apartment, reportedly screaming "I have to see him!"

BIRDS OF PREY

Did Chris Christie close Denver's passing lanes? The Seattle Seahawks shredded Peyton Manning's team 43-8 in the second-most-lopsided Super Bowl ever. It's Seattle's first NFL championship in franchise history. The voluble Richard Sherman left the game early with an ankle injury.

EARLY WIN

Fears of terrorist attacks in Sochi have dominated the media's coverage of the Winter Olympics, and that's exactly the kind of attention terrorists crave, writes Dean Obeidallah. Barring evidence of a new threat, stop giving the terrorists free publicity. Those vowing to destroy the Olympic Games and kill innocent people are not the ones who deserve media coverage—the athletes do.

WOW

The abortion rate in the United States has fallen to its lowest level since 1973, the year Roe v. Wade was decided by the Supreme Court. A study released Sunday by the Guttmacher Institute reports 16.9 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 in 2011. The relatively low rate isn't because abortion providers are being squeezed, but because pregnancy and birth rates have fallen. In addition, "early medication abortions" (the Plan B pill) rose to 23 percent of all nonhospital abortions. The total number of abortion providers declined by 4 percent between 2008 and 2011, and the number of clinics declined by just 1 percent.

FAMILY FEUD

Woody Allen did not wait long to respond to adopted daughter Dylan Farrow's molestation accusations in an open letter in The New York Times. His publicist, Leslee Dart, dismissed the claims as "untrue and disgraceful." She also stressed that "experts concluded there was no credible evidence of molestation; that Dylan Farrow had an inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality"; and that Allen has long accused his ex, Mia Farrow, of coaching Dylan to fabricate the claims. Still, a prosecutor involved in the case has said there was "probably cause" to charge Allen, but he had chosen not to for the sake of protecting Dylan. In her letter, Dylan Farrow called out Hollywood and celebrities for ignoring her abuse and only honoring Allen. Cate Blanchett, one of the celebrities directly mentioned, responded, saying "It's obviously been a long and painful situation for the family and I hope they find some resolution and peace."
