THE BLUES

He was Wyclef Jean's musical director and even jammed with Bowie. The Daily Beast's Michael Daly Reports on the rapid downfall of Robert Vineberg, the virtuoso who's being held without bail in the wake of Philip Seymour Hoffman's fatal overdose.

ALARMING

An F-16 military jet forced an airliner flying from Ukraine to Turkey to ground on Friday after a hijack attempt. According to reports, a Ukrainian passenger demanded the destination be switched to Sochi, and claimed there was a bomb on board. The pilot was able to send an alert signal, which caused authorities to scramble the military jet. The plane had 110 passengers. Turkish authorities are now sweeping the plane and passengers for explosives.

STAR-STUDDED

Parisians have chic, Italians have la dolce vita, Brits have Evelyn Waugh—but since the jazz era, Americans have deemed the hippest among us "cool." The Daily Beast's William O'Connor takes a look at a new National Portrait Gallery exhibit that spotlights the stars who have shaped and embodied the concept that is our ultimate tribute.

DOCTORS V. MIDWIVES

There's a war being fought over women's reproductive rights, and this time it's not about abortion but where women should have their babies. The fight is escalating, turning incendiary on Twitter. The Daily Beast's Brandy Zadrozny explains why everyone's right and wrong—and what they could learn from each other.

IMPOTENT

Despite a reputation for omnipotence and omniscience, the NSA is collecting less than 30 percent of all U.S. call records thanks to the surge in cellphone usage. According to officials, back in 2006, the agency was able to collect nearly all records about Americans' phone calls under a classified program. Now, as more and more people migrate away from landlines, the NSA finds itself faced with challenges in not only acquiring the data from wireless companies, but also having databases capable of handling the large amounts of records. While some would argue the less-than-30-percent number would signify a lack of value to the data collection, NSA Deputy Director Rick Ledgett defended the agency, arguing, "It's better than zero."
