Cheat Sheet - 'We Lost Soldiers Hunting for Bergdahl'

Read This, Skip That ....

June 02, 2014
HIGH PRICE
Now that Bowe Bergdahl has been freed from Taliban captivity, one of his fellow soldiers wants to talk about why he was captured. Nathan Bradley Bethea, who served in the same battalion as Bergdahl in Afghanistan, writes that America's lone POW was a deserter who walked off base in the dead of night five years ago. Doing so cost his unit the lives of soldiers trying to find him. The hunt for Bergdahl was even more infuriating than the war itself because it was the result of someone doing something unnecessary by his own volition.
ENERGETIC
With Monday's pending announcement of sweeping new regulations to cut emissions from coal power plants, President Obama is finally making good on campaign promises to fight climate change. After six years of wavering on environmental issues, Obama's overhaul of the energy industry will be just as dramatic as his overhaul of the national health-care system, writes Jason Mark.
BACKTRACKING

Hopes that Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese woman sentenced to death for marrying a Christian, would walk free have all but faded. On Saturday, an undersecretary at Sudan's foreign ministry suggested Ibrahim would be freed, but a day later the government appeared to backtrack. A foreign ministry spokesman said only the courts could decide Ibrahim's fate and that he was "not aware that any release is imminent." Sudan has earned international scorn since news broke that Ibrahim was sentenced to death for apostasy. Although she identifies as Christian, the court ruled she was a Muslim and considered her marriage to her Christian husband a capital crime under Islamic law. Since refusing to renounce her Christianity, she has sat in jail, where she gave birth a few days ago to her second child.

UGLY

The lawyer for V. Stiviano, the woman who secretly recorded Donald Sterling's infamous remarks, says his client was assaulted in New York City on Sunday night and called racial slurs. "Two white men descended on her" when Stiviano left the Gansevoort Hotel around 7 p.m., said attorney Mac Nehoray. He added "They were about 5'7 and they knew exactly who she was. They began to hit her and called her the N-word." Stiviano reportedly needed medical attention, but hasn't decided whether to file a police report. The announcement came after a video of Stiviano's own racist comments from a reported 2011 reality-TV show pilot leaked, in which she complained "I don't understand black people. You give them a little bit of money, they don't know what to do with it."

HORRIBLE

The sexual-abuse charges against British media personality and television host Jimmy Savile only get worse, and it appears his former employer, the BBC, did little to prevent it. Savile, who died in 2011, was popular in England, and was knighted by the queen. However, since his death, child-molestation accusations have emerged, and a new investigation by Britain's National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children goes even further. The charity said Savile might be the "most prolific sex offender" it had ever come across and that much of the abuse occurred on BBC premises. The broadcast company began investigating Savile's behavior in 1972, but never acted on recommendations for protecting young audiences, and many continued to be abused. Most alleged victims were reportedly between the ages of 13 and 15, but one was as young as 2. Savile was also given access to Broadmoor hospital, where he reportedly took advantage of patients.
