From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 68 - ISSN: 1533-3698 May 21, 2011

Dear People:

On the subject of attire for work, here's another issue that goes around, comes around, every year - panty hose - or the lack thereof. So, every year about this time, I resurrect my polls. I need to draw a line between what's old-fashioned and what's currently deemed appropriate dress for work, job interviews, and employer-sponsored civic events. Young people and older people seem to have differing views, so that makes for an interesting generational discussion. The young employees are winning though. In the spring time, proper work attire receives lots of attention. While we're talking about what employees ought to wear to work in a variety of settings, I'd like to start the discussion with a smart eighteen year old's perspective (you know the exact kind of young person you'd like to hire in a couple of years). Find out more about the debate and vote in my two polls. Have a marvelous weekend. It's sunny here and it's art fair weekend. What more could I ask for?

This can include a bad boss, a rude coworker, or management decisions that they don't like. But does an obnoxious coworker constitute a hostile work environment? Probably not - but sometimes it could. Find out when.

Network Before You Need a Network

Harvey Mackay, well-known, irreverent speaker and author of Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty, tells you that networking is a full time job no matter your career or business. And, you want to have a professional network established long before you need a network. Don't wait until a layoff looms, or you hate your job, or you just need a change, network now. Read more...

Why Shine at an Internal Job Interview?

A reader asks,"I have a presentation to make to an interview board, followed by an interview tomorrow, for a position for which I am afraid I am not being seriously considered. I am not being defeatist; it is just that I am fully aware who is ear marked for the job. I have in fact been told as much. I do, however, want to give a good account of myself, but I am finding it difficult to motivate myself. What do you recommend?" Lots.

How to Develop Your Managers on the Job

Developing your managers is truly your most critical talent task. Most management development does not involve outside classes. Management development is the overall concept that describes the many ways that organizations help employees develop their personal and organizational skills, either as managers in a management job or with an eventual management job in mind.
