From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 127 - ISSN: 1533-3698 September 24, 2011

Dear People:

Implementing contracts with employees after the fact is always an approach fraught with difficulty. Some employees will take signing a non compete agreement or a non disclosure contract, after working for an employer for years, negatively. Because you're in their eighteen inches of space, employees don't like ultimatums, which they often are: sign or leave. They feel as if their employer has ceased to trust them or that their rights are being taken away retroactively. They feel pressured to sign the contract even if they are already heeding its contents. It is rarely the content of the contract that disturbs them; it is the fact that they worked for years without one. And, they ask, what changed?

Cures for Negativity

Your workplace is seething with hostility and negativity. No matter where the bad vibes came from, it's up to you to help make the atmosphere more positive, productive and supportive. As a manager, supervisor, or staff member, you usually do not control the situation that is causing the negativity. Perhaps no one in your workplace does. How you address negativity depends on whether you control it and how it started in the first place. The timeliness of your intervention also has an impact. Learn more.

Healthcare Benefits Predictions for 2012

Interested in the latest in employer provided health insurance costs? Early responses from a Mercer Consulting survey, that is still in the field, suggest that the average growth in health benefit costs will slow to 5.4% in 2012, the smallest increase since 1997. However, even with the lower increase, the cost growth remains well above both general inflation and growth in workers' earnings. Find out what employers plan to do.

Impact of Healthcare Act Underestimated

Are you interested in the potential impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act? Predictions are all over the board and the courts are likely to decide key components, so crystal balling the impact is difficult - but, with the studies going on currently, you can make some predictions. Here's the best analysis that I have seen that predicts the future of employer provided health care insurance under the current guidelines of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. You'll want to find out more.

Take a Stand Group Ice Breaker

Take a Stand Group Ice Breaker breaks the ice in a meeting, team building or training session in more ways than one. Not only do you get your group thinking and taking a stand on issues that participants will have the chance to defend, but you get your group physically moving. Like most ice breakers, you'll need to prepare in advance, but the variations of this group ice breaker are only narrowed by your imagination. Read more...
