Career and Job Options

From Alison Doyle, your Guide to Job Searching
Welcome to the Job Search Class! This week, we'll start with exploring career and job options. It is important to dedicate time, energy and effort to planning the next phase of your career to ensure a positive outcome. This may seem like it is taking valuable time that you could be spending working on your resume and applying for jobs. However, dedicating time now will save you work (and time) in the long run - your job search will be more focused and targeted.
The Career Planning Process
Self-Assessment is a vital and often overlooked step in planning your various career paths. In order to evaluate the suitability of work options, it is important to know who you are as a person. This involves taking a careful inventory of your current values, interests, skills and personal qualities. Yes, it takes time, but, once you've narrowed down your options you'll be able to focus your job search much more effectively.

Research Career Options
Review the nature of the work, working conditions, training and educational requirements, job outlook and earnings for many different fields. Research industries and employers as well as specific jobs. Review and compare alternatives. Most importantly, consider options that you feel comfortable with and that will provide you with satisfying employment. Once you've narrowed done some options, you'll be ready to start exploring the job market for those fields.

Take a Career Test
A career aptitude test can give you an indication of which jobs match your personality and which careers you may have an aptitude for. There are a variety of online career aptitude tests and assessments that can help you determine what type of job matches your career interests and aptitudes. In addition, there are employment tests and talent assessments companies use to determine if you are a good fit for the jobs you are applying for.

Create a Job Search Action Plan
Next, map out a plan for how you are going to conduct your job search. Planning ahead will save time and energy while you are actually job searching.
