Cheat Sheet - Murdoch, the Man Who Won't Apologize

Today: PM Wants Elections in 8 Months, Confirmed: Bachmann's NH Staff Left, Panetta: Iraq Details Still to Come
The Daily Beast Cheat Sheet: Morning

KING

Rupert Murdoch strong-armed dissenting News Corp. investors to remain on the board after a tense annual meeting this week, but if anyone was wondering if he'll repent for the phone-hacking scandal, the answer was: not at all. His lack of attrition—at least in front of shareholders—is hardly surprising, writes The Daily Beast's Nicholas Wapshott.

LIBYA

Libyan interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril says he wants elections to be held within eight months to create a national congress, which would have two tasks: to draft a constitution and to form an interim government that would last until the first presidential elections. The National Transitional Council said it plans to declare "full liberation" on Sunday, an unexplained postponement of a day. The burial of Muammar Gaddafi has also been postponed as the United Nations, the United States, and human rights groups call for an investigation into his death. Videos of his capture raise concerns that he and his son Mutassim were executed.

EXODUS

It doesn't bode well for Michele Bachmann's campaign that no one knew the entire New Hampshire paid staff had left. The resignation of Bachmann's team was first reported Friday by New Hampshire television station WMUR, but when asked about it, Bachmann called the story "shocking" and denied it was true. But Bachmann's former New Hampshire campaign director, Jeff Chidester, said he quit a week ago and told the national campaign. At least three, and possibly four, other staffers left. One, Carolilne Gilger, Bachmann's southern state field director, is joining Rick Perry's campaign.

WITHDRAWAL

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Friday night that Washington still needs to discuss with the Iraqi government the details of the troop withdrawal. President Obama announced earlier Friday that all U.S. troops will leave Iraq by the end of 2011—prompting many to wonder what role the U.S. will take, especially after the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Army Gen. Lloyd Austin, said earlier this year that Iraq is not fully capable of protecting itself. Iraq rejected the U.S.'s proposal to keep military bases in that country, and the U .S. and Iraq have not agreed yet how many U.S. military personnel will be at the embassy in Baghdad. Panetta likened the future Iraq to Bahrain, where there are nearly 5,000 troops as part of the Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters.

ACTIVITY

Could Rep. Gabrielle Giffords be running for reelection? The congresswoman, who was badly wounded in the Tucson shootings, hasn't signaled any intention to run, but the Arizona Capitol Times reports that her campaign is spending money as if she were gearing up for a race. Between July and September her team raised $189,000 and spent nearly half of it—almost double the amount the same time two years ago. Her campaign has also paid thousands of dollars to fundraising consultants. However, her advisers are also reportedly encouraging former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona to run for the seat.
