From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 147 - ISSN: 1533-3698 November 10, 2011

Dear People:

November is National Life Writing Month and Family Stories Month so I've been thinking about how writing and stories affect work culture. It's not such a big leap to move from your personal life stories to the workplace. I have long encouraged you to write your personal vision statement, your goals, and your company strategic plan so that you and your coworkers are grounded and feel connected to a whole greater than yourselves. It strikes me that writing out your company history and stories is equally important - for you and your culture. Read more.

Do you know that I write a new blog post every day? Check out the blog in the center column on my home page.

Please forward this newsletter, in its entirety, to your colleagues, coworkers and friends, because you want to add value to their work and lives.

Regards and wishing you and yours the best this weekend,

Susan

Overcome Your Fear of Confrontation and Conflict

A former colleague holds complete conversations in his head with people with whom he is angry. He rarely speaks directly with the other person. This anger in his mind continues to build because of his frustration, yet he never lets the other person know that he is frustrated and subsequently angry. This is a recipe for disaster in a work - or personal - relationship. You can confront these issues. Here's how.

Need a Simple Business Attire Policy?

Need a simple, sample dress code policy to specify appropriate business attire for your workplace? I've developed lengthy business attire policies in response to reader requests. But, some workplace managers may not choose to so closely describe and monitor employee business attire. If that describes your workplace, these new policies are for you. Pick the policy that reflects your workplace style.

Enable a Mentor's Contribution to Your Success

Working with a client group, we identified the characteristics of the employees who had mentored them during their developmental years. They added what they wished mentors had provided. I added my own thoughts about successful mentors that I and others have experienced and known. The compiled list is the 15 most important characteristics of successful mentors. Find out more about successful mentoring.

Documentation Dilemma: CYA or...?

When should you send emails to document an employee's performance? The answer to this reader's question is, "not often." Written documentation is powerful and emails rarely show and tell the whole story. And, most managers are not very good at documenting or following through on problem performance. So here's advice about how to handle this issue.
