Today: Arab League Mulling Syria Return, Romney Wins Maine Caucus, Greece Set to Pass Bailout Plan
The Daily Beast Cheat Sheet: Morning

OBIT

Pop superstar Whitney Houston was found dead in L.A’s Beverly Hilton on Saturday. She was just 48. The cause of her death is still unknown—police say there were no signs of foul play, and an unconfirmed report from TMZ suggests that no illegal drugs were present. The Daily Beast’s Allison Samuels, who interviewed Houston many times, was at the hotel when her body was discovered. She writes about her relationship with Houston, a troubling interview five years ago during which the singer was obviously high, and the famous friends who tried to help. Plus, photos and videos of Houston’s legendary career.

AGAIN

As the violence in Syria continue to spin out of control, the Arab League is meeting Sunday to consider sending monitors back into the devastated country. But a new proposal could expand the mission to include observers from the United Nations and non-Arab Muslim nations, officials said. A “Syria group” will meet in Cairo and then make recommendations to foreign ministers later Sunday.

VICTORY

More good news for Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor took first place in the Maine Caucuses on Saturday with 39 percent of the votes. Ron Paul was close behind with 36 percent. Rick Santorum, who won three states earlier this week, finished in third place with 18 percent and Newt Gingrich took a distant fourth with 6 percent. Romney also won the CPAC straw poll earlier in the day.

PRESSURE

Greek lawmakers are set to vote on an unpopular bailout deal Sunday. After much pleading from Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, the plan, with its deep austerity measures, looks like it will pass, which will help the country avoid default in March. The measures will cut $4.35 billion in wages, pensions, and jobs—the price for a rescue package from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. Germany ratcheted up the pressure Sunday, with Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäeuble saying, “The promises from Greece aren’t enough for us anymore,” calling on the country to dramatically change its ways if it wants to stay in the euro zone.

CLOSE

Close, but no dice. Ron Paul nearly pulled off a win against Mitt Romney in the Maine caucuses, and there was disappointment at the campaign headquarters in Maine on Saturday night. When the Romney win was announced, supporters angrily booed the news. But Paul was optimistic about his 200-vote loss: “It’s almost like we could call it a tie.” A Paul campaign news release sent out shortly after the results even said: “Ron Paul Victory in Maine!” It also stated that “we are confident we will control the Maine delegation for the convention in August.”
