Rescuers find ravaged Homs neighborhood deserted
Most inhabitants of the devastated Syrian district of Babr Amr in Homs have fled, a Red Cross spokesman said. Aid workers entered the area as UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos pressed for more access to the needy.

Brussels has threatened to sue Hungary unless it revises controversial new laws. The EU Commission believes the legislation infringes on the judiciary's independence and data protection principles - as well as EU law.

The man who admitted to planting a bomb in Oslo and going on a deadly shooting rampage at a political youth camp in Norway has been charged under the country's terror laws, yet his psychiatric state is still in doubt.

Greek banks confirm debt swap participation
As the deadline for participation in a writedown of Greek debt approaches, six of Greece's largest banks have reportedly lined up to take part in the deal. Several pension funds, however, say they will refuse.
Strikes
Public sector strikes hit Germany's biggest state
Germany's most populous state became the latest to be hit by a warning strike by public servants on Wednesday. The ver.di trade union is demanding a 6.5 percent raise for its members.
