International court convicts warlord over child soldiers in first verdict ever
The International Criminal Court in The Hague has pronounced Thomas Lubanga guilty of war crimes. The rebel leader recruited and deployed children to fight in jungle militias in eastern Congo.

Bus accident in Switzerland kills dozens
A bus accident in Switzerland has claimed the lives of at least 28 people, mainly children. The bus was carrying two classes of Belgian students back home after a skiiing holiday.

Russia supplying weapons to Syrian government
Although frustrated with the pace of reform in Syria, Russia is sending arms to the government in Damascus. France, meanwhile, wants to try the Syrian president before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

German, US defense ministers visit Afghanistan in wake of US killings
Days after Angela Merkel visited Afghanistan, her defense minister has followed suit. Thomas de Maiziere's trip coincides with that of his US counterpart, Leon Panetta, in the wake of a US soldier killing 16 civilians.

Eurozone gives formal approval to second Greek bailout
Athens is officially out of the financial woods - at least for the time being. The head of the Eurogroup has announced that Greece's second bailout has cleared all parliamentary hurdles.

Polish court orders retrial over alleged Afghan war crimes
Poland's Supreme Court has ordered a retrial of four Polish soldiers who were acquitted of war crimes for an attack on an Afghan village. The case is the first such court martial involving Polish troops fighting abroad.

EU looks into possible collusion by telecoms firms
The European Union's anti-trust chiefs have asked five telecoms giants to provide detailed info about meetings they have been having since 2010.
Food and Drink
EU ends beef trade war with North America
The European Parliament has voted in favor of ending a decades-old trade war over beef imports from North America. Imports will rise, but the EU will maintain its ban on hormone-treated meat.
