Dear People:
Exciting news. In light of the media frenzy over employers asking prospective employees for their Facebook passwords, I am developing a social media policy. It will be timely and on target for current conditions in the recruiting and selection world. I have written a social media and blogging policy that covers your employee presence online, but it doesn't get into the brave new world of recruiting and screening online. The question that I have received most often from reporters and employers since the Facebook controversy began is one that I can't answer. Did the media embrace a controversy or are a lot of employers asking candidates for access to private online social accounts? I don't know any employers who do this and I don't know any HR experts who approve of the practice. What do you think? Media frenzy or real problem?
LinkedIn and other social networking sites are advantageous for employers who use them for both networking and recruiting. I've interviewed an expert and made recommendations about how employers should recruit, screen, and background check potential employees in social media - and not one of the recommendations includes breaching your prospective employee's privacy. Can you imagine how a person would feel about coming to work for your company after you had asked for access to and explored his or her private social media pages? I disapprove of the practice and advise different ways to background check potential employees including in social media. What do you think?
