Vol. 13 No. 47 - ISSN: 1533-3698 April 21, 2012

Dear People:

Exciting news. In light of the media frenzy over employers asking prospective employees for their Facebook passwords, I am developing a social media policy. It will be timely and on target for current conditions in the recruiting and selection world. I have written a social media and blogging policy that covers your employee presence online, but it doesn't get into the brave new world of recruiting and screening online. The question that I have received most often from reporters and employers since the Facebook controversy began is one that I can't answer. Did the media embrace a controversy or are a lot of employers asking candidates for access to private online social accounts? I don't know any employers who do this and I don't know any HR experts who approve of the practice. What do you think? Media frenzy or real problem?

LinkedIn and other social networking sites are advantageous for employers who use them for both networking and recruiting. I've interviewed an expert and made recommendations about how employers should recruit, screen, and background check potential employees in social media - and not one of the recommendations includes breaching your prospective employee's privacy. Can you imagine how a person would feel about coming to work for your company after you had asked for access to and explored his or her private social media pages? I disapprove of the practice and advise different ways to background check potential employees including in social media. What do you think?

Employees Selling Food at Work?

A reader asks if I think it is okay for employees to ask for contributions for candy and to sell baked goods to coworkers at work. She also wants to know if she needs a policy and what I think. I gave her a long response but think I am overthinking this question. How do you handle situations like this in your workplace? Find out more...

What Is the Best Day to Fire an Employee?

Some of the details employers consider when firing an employee have changed in recent years due to the proliferation of online resources for job search. Employers believed that it was unkind to fire an employee on Friday, for one, because the former employee would be stuck all weekend with little to do to launch a job search. The times they are a'changing, but some things never change. Find out more.

Think About Training More Creatively

Received a note recently that asked whether we should continue training employees during tougher economic times. My immediate visceral reaction was, "Whaaaat???" I know. Hardly mature. But, when will employers figure out that there will never be a time when you cannot afford to continue to train and develop employees. They are your most significant resource. And, there may lay the rub... Read more...
