Greek voters are set to go to the polls for the second time in the space of a few weeks. Efforts by the president to broker a compromise to form a government broke down on Tuesday.

Hollande takes office as France's president
French President Francois Hollande has named Jean-Marc Ayrault as the country's new prime minister. The newly sworn-in president then headed to Berlin to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

EU's anti-pirate force attacks target on Somali coast
The European Union's anti-pirate mission off the Somali coast has for the first time launched an attack on land, targeting pirate supplies on the shoreline.

UN vehicle hit as Syrian violence intensifies
United Nations peace observers have been caught up the latest violence in Syria. One of their cars traveling in a convoy was hit by an improvised explosive device. None of the monitors were injured.

Former British tabloid editor charged over hacking scandal
Ex-tabloid editor Rebekah Brooks has been charged over her alleged role in a phone hacking scandal. The development comes after she was questioned about her links to the British prime minister.

Iran hangs man for killing nuclear scientist
Iran has hanged a man who was sentenced to death for the killing of a nuclear physicist in 2010. He was also found guilty of being an agent for Israeli's spy agency Mossad.

Ukraine court delays Tymoshenko appeal case
A Ukrainian appeals court has abruptly postponed its review of the abuse-of-office conviction against former premier Yulia Tymoshenko. Her legal team says it will now take her case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Germany wards off recession with moderate growth
Germany's economy has successfully rebounded from end-of-2011 contraction, posting a surprising increase in gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter of this year.
