THE DISH

Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space, was gay—but you wouldn’t know it from The New York Times’s obituary of the trailblazing female astronaut. The Daily Beast’s Andrew Sullivan on why the Times’s hesitancy to address Ride’s sexual orientation is not just disrespectful—it’s an act of obliteration.

DIABOLICAL

Police were finally able to enter James Holmes's booby-trapped apartment and found over 30 homemade grenades and 10 gallons of gasoline, which officials believe were intended to explode and harm at least part of the apartment building as soon as Holmes's door was opened. "Imagine that fireball … you would have an explosion that would knock down the wall of [nearby] apartments. That flame would have consumed the entire third floor" of the apartment complex, the official said. "By the time a fire truck would have arrived," the building would have been engulfed in flames. Meanwhile, at least three were arrested for Dark Knight-related threats.

PRISON

Monsignor William Lynn, a Roman Catholic official who was found guilty last month of endangering a child, was sentenced to a three to six year prison term on Tuesday. Lynn is the first Catholic official in the U.S. to be convicted of covering up sex crimes committed by priests. His lawyers had asked for leniency, arguing sending Lynn to jail would serve no purpose. Prosecutors asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence because he gave known predators access to children. Lynn’s lawyers have said they will appeal the conviction.

TELL YOUR STORIES

Chick-Fil-A came under criticism this month after a report by the organization Equality Matters revealed that the company donated around $2 million to antigay Christian organizations in 2010. “Guilty as charged,” the fast-food chain’s president Dan Cathy said over allegations that his company is antigay (“We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit.”).
