The Daily Beast’s Allison Samuels on how three of Michael’s siblings allegedly tried to confiscate the phones of Michael’s kids, some of the siblings want to contest the will, and more of the ugly drama behind the scenes. WARNING SIGNS Much like other mass murderers, Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes seemingly wanted to be caught in the act. Holmes reportedly detailed his planned massacre in a notebook that he mailed to a University of Colorado psychiatrist more than a week before his shooting spree at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises last Friday. Police and FBI agents found the unopened notebook Monday morning while searching the mailroom of the University of Colorado, Anschutz, medical-school campus, but it was reportedly delivered on July 12—eight days before the shooting. A law-enforcement official said the package contained “details about how he was going to kill people” and “drawings and illustrations of the massacre,” including gun-wielding stick figures opening fire on other stick figures. ETCH a SKETCH Mitt Romney has declared that stricter gun control laws wouldn’t have made a difference in the Colorado shooting. But did he always feel that way? The Daily Beast’s Jesse Singal takes us through Romney’s gun past. ANONYMOUS SOURCES The U.K.'s Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday that one of Mitt Romney's advisers said, “We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the unnamed adviser said. “The White House doesn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have.” Well, naturally, that comment sparked accusations of racism—not least of all from top Obama campaign tweeter/adviser David Axelrod—as the adviser’s words could be interpreted to mean that Romney is better equipped to understand the relationship between London and the U.S. because he is of “Anglo-Saxon heritage” and Obama’s father was, you know, born in Kenya. As Mitt makes his way to London for the Olympics, his campaign is fully denying The Telegraph’s report. “It’s not true,” said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul in an email. “If anyone said that, they weren’t reflecting the views of Governor Romney or anyone inside the campaign.” UNDER SIEGE Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city, is the setting of intense fighting this week, as thousands of Syrian soldiers are being taken off their Turkey border posts to join the battle against rebels in Aleppo. President Bashar al-Assad’s forces have avoided a rebel takeover of Damascus by diverting the violence to Aleppo, the first time fighting has hit either major city since turmoil began to stir in the country more than a year ago. Military helicopters have been reportedly bombing some parts of Damascus, despite the government apparently retaking control of the capitol. The government is even deploying fighter jets over Aleppo, Syria’s commercial center, for the first time since antiregime violence began. | |
