TEXAS A&M SHOOTING

The mother of the man accused of a deadly shooting near Texas A&M University said Monday night that her son had mental “difficulties,” and police said the suspect was being served with an eviction notice at the time of the shooting. On Monday night, police identified Thomas Caffall as the man suspected of killing two and wounding four others before being shot to death by police. Police said Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann, who was serving the eviction notice, and bystander Chris Northcliff, 51, were killed. Three other College Station police officers were injured and a Houston mother was also shot.

Iranian officials on Tuesday called the recent Israeli threats of an attack “stupid” and “baseless.” “Even if some officials in the illegitimate regime (Israel) want to carry out such a stupid action, there are those inside (the Israeli government) who won’t allow it because they know they would suffer very severe consequences from such an act,” said foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast in a weekly briefing. White House spokesman Jay Carney, meanwhile, insisted on Monday that “there is time and space for diplomacy,” despite harsh rhetoric from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday about the suspected Iranian nuclear weapons program.

SYRIA

One of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s top aides flew to China on Tuesday for talks as Chinese officials insisted they would attempt to implement the proposed United Nation’s six-point peace plan. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said hosting Syrian official Bouthaina Shaaban is in line with China’s “above-mentioned work by the Chinese side”—and said they are considering hosting the opposition at some point in the future. China and Russia have vetoed U.N. resolutions against the Syrian regime during the violent crackdown that has reportedly left tens of thousands dead. U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos arrived in Syria on Tuesday to help distribute humanitarian aid, while Reuters reported veteran fighters of Libya’s civil war have arrived in Syria to join the opposition.
