GENERATION SCREWED

Boomers don’t want to give up their sweet deal, but the rest of us have reason to embrace Ryan’s ‘radical’ plans, writes The Daily Beast’s Kirsten Powers.

HACKING

Andy Coulson, the former press secretary for British Prime Minister David Cameron, and six others will appear in a London court on Thursday on charges of alleged phone hacking. Coulson, the former editor of the now-defunct tabloid the News of the World, and the other six staff members of the newspaper have been accused of hacking into the phones of up to 600 people between October 2000 and August 2006. Meanwhile, News Corp., the owner of the shuttered tabloid, has launched an anticorruption review at several of its publishing arms, including London’s News International, according a staff memo on Wednesday.

END OF AN ERA

A black guy, a Mormon, and two Catholics walk into a presidential election. The Daily Beast’s Peter Schrag delivers the punch line about the end of the old elite.

YIKES

President Obama’s campaign on Wednesday accused Republicans of “Swift Boat tactics” after ads featuring U.S. intelligence and Special Forces operatives criticizing him for taking credit for the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. “Swift Boat” is a term for harsh campaign tactics adopted after former President George W. Bush’s campaign made now-discredited attacks on John Kerry’s military record in 2004. Obama’s campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt hit back on the attack ad, saying Mitt Romney is only using it because of a lack of foreign policy experience. The 22-minute video released Wednesday by a group called OSPEC accuses Obama of taking undeserved credit for the bin Laden raid.

TERROR

A central air force base in Pakistan was attacked by what the military is calling a group “terrorists,” possibly the Taliban. Eight attackers and one security official were killed in the two-hour gunfight at the Minhas base in Kamra. The base is located 25 miles northwest of Islamabad, and is suspected to hold some of the nation's nuclear material. Pakistan was rumored to be on the verge of launching a campaign in the militant hub of North Wziristan.
