Dozens of people have been killed in a cluster of explosions in the center of Syria's second city, Aleppo. Meanwhile, a shell was reported to have been fired across the border into Turkey, killing at least three people.

US presidential candidates set for showdown
Obama and Romney are to go head-to-head on the economy in the first election run-up debate between the rivals. The world is watching Mitt Romney, who may need to 'win' the showdown more than Obama.

NATO nations extend Rasmussen's term until 2014
NATO member nations have extended the mandate of the alliance's Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen until July 2014. The timing allows him to oversee planning of combat troop withdrawals from Afghanistan.

Unrest in Tehran over rial currency plunge
A rapid plunge in Iran's currency has resulted in clashes in Tehran's central money exchange district, Ferdowsi. Police squads fired tear gas to disperse protesters and shut kiosks, according to witnesses.
Technology
Eleven charged over 'secret' exports to Russia
New York authorities have charged 11 members of a network for allegedly exporting high-tech military electronics to Russia. They are accused of knowingly hiding the truth about what the equipment would be used for.
Africa
At least 26 students killed in Nigeria college attacks
At least 26 people have been killed at a university residence in northeastern Nigeria. Islamist insurgents have been active in the area, but police say the killings could be the result of a political feud on campus.
Germany
Germans mark national unification holiday
Most Germans have the day off from work on Wednesday to celebrate the national holiday, which marks the country's unification 22 years ago.
