In Brussels, another gathering to save the euro
EU leaders have begun a two-day summit in Brussels aimed at tackling the eurozone crisis. Hours earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for stepped-up efforts to resolve the European sovereign debt crisis.

Greeks stage fourth general strike
Greek police have clashed with anti-austerity demonstrators as thousands gathered to protest against planned government spending cuts. Meanwhile trade unions have staged a second major general strike in three weeks.

Syria's north hit by government airstrikes
Syrian fighter jets have hit rebel-held areas in the country's north with a series of airstrikes. According to anti-regime activists at least 20 people were killed in the attacks.

Colombia launches peace talks with FARC rebels
Colombia's government has formally launched peace talks with leftist FARC rebels. The closed-door talks in Norway are the latest attempt to end almost five decades of conflict.

Karzai says Afghan troops would be ready for early transition
NATO's secretary-general has insisted during a visit to Kabul that combat troops will remain in Afghanistan until late 2014. Afghan President Hamid Karzai said his forces would, however, be ready for an early withdrawal.

Steinbrück challenges Merkel in parliament
Germany has witnessed the first rejoinder in parliament from the opposition Social Democrats' new top nominee for next year's election. Peer Steinbrück accused Chancellor Angela Merkel of mismanaging the eurozone crisis.

Twitter blocks German neo-Nazi account
The microblogging website Twitter has blocked the account of a German neo-Nazi group. The move came in response to a request from German police.

US weekly Newsweek will do without print edition
Come the end of this year, the venerable Newsweek will no longer appear as a print edition. Top executives of the magazine have announced that the weekly will move to an all-digital format to save costs.
