Syria car bomb explosion shatters ceasefire truce
Syrian state television and a rights watchdog say a number of people have been killed following a car bomb attack in Damascus, breaking a temporary cease-fire agreed to by government and rebel forces.

Berlusconi sentenced to prison for tax fraud
The former prime minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, was convicted of tax evasion on Friday, and sentenced to four years in prison. He has also been banned from holding public office for three years.

Suicide bombing darkens holy day in Afghanistan
A suicide bombing has killed at least 40 people in the northwestern Afghanistan province of Faryab. The attack came on the first day of the Eid al-Adha holiday.

Thousands displaced in Myanmar religious unrest
The number killed has grown above 60 and thousands have been displaced as violence in Myanmar continues. The fighting has cast a shadow over the reformist government's attempts to remake Myanmar's international image.

EU awards Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought
The European Parliament has named two Iranians the winners of the Sakharov freedom prize. The filmmaker and human rights lawyer take their place among previous laureates, including Nelson Mandela and Aung Sang Suu Kyi.

US braces itself for superstorm
At least 21 people are dead after Hurricane Sandy cut a path of destruction through the Caribbean. Meteorologists are predicting a "Frankenstorm" if Sandy collides with a cold front in the US around Halloween.

Russian investigators have laid out criminal charges against a leading figure in the country's opposition movement. This is just the latest in what critics see as a clampdown on dissent by the Kremlin.

European inspectors have lauded Spain for the progress made in its financial sector. They have said Madrid has so far met all deadlines required to secure a bailout for the country's ailing lenders.
