Finding out what your employees think can be the key to an organization's success. It is also important to have people in your organization who think differently than yourself to provide differing opinions and new ideas.

Vanessa said...

Those 4 words are strong and empowering. Asking employees that question could make your business smoother and more profitable.

Annette said...

These four words are important and finding out an opinion could really help you especially coming from the employees or customers.

Travis said...

I think it's important to help the employee feel like they belong. Not enough manager's do this on a daily basis. I wish my boss asked me, "what do you think?"

Blanca said...

These four words make anyone feel like a valuable employee. Employees devote their hard work, so it is nice to also have the opportunity to input their opinion.

Christina said...

"What do you think?" should be asked frequently by a manger or owner of a business to their employees. Most of you employees are the ones doing all the interacting with the customers. The employees can see and know what needs to changed to make everything work more efficient.

Andrea said...

Because employees are dealing with customers on a more personal level it is important to know what they think when it comes to running a business. The employee is the one who can let the managers know what customers what and what works best for the business.

Janelle said...

I do agree that businesses should ask their employees "what do you think", because they are interacting with the customers on a daily basis and they are aware and hear suggestions from others and may have great opinions and ideas of their own. This can help the "machine" run well or even great! My old boss was great about asking us, as her employees what we thought and her store was one of the top independantly owned locations in our area.

Ashley Roberts said...

This video makes a great point. Asking someone's opinion about something can make them feel valuable and knowledgeable. What someone else thinks may be the best advice you'll ever hear. I believe that if managers and supervisors would ask lower level employees "what do you think" more often, it would empower those employees and they would take more pride in what they do.

Taylor said...

"What do you think?" These four words thrown into a simple phrase is very empowering. To get asked a question asking for your opinion makes you feel important as a person. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Whether you want to hear them or not is where you gain your respect from that other being. Showing that their opinion matters, shows that you care.

Chancie said...

Those words are very empowering and can lead to higher satisfaction among both employees and customers. This leadership style would be considered participative management and is historically successful. Employees feel empowered whenever their suggestions or opinions are considered which leads to more satisfied employees.

Megan said...

The four most important words in an organization are, "What do you think?" I can see how important that phrase is when it comes to having a business or having employees ask a customer that question. I do agree that it makes an individual feel valued and that someone cares about their opinion and what they have to say. I personally would like to be asked that question from time to time, because most people think differently about certain issues and like to express their opinions to others.

Regdricka said...

We use these four words in our daily lives. Who would've thought that they would be the most important words to an organization and its leadership. I realize that the opinions of the management, employees, and customers keep the business or organization formed towards the purpose of its needs. It also makes it more perfected getting feed back from others.

kristinp0902 said...

"What do you think?" are four very important words that should be asked more frequently by managers to their employees. Employees are a lot of times the key to success for a business. Employees have the most interaction with customers and may be able to give managers valuable information. Also, by asking these words makes employees feel that managers actually care about their opinions and that they matter.

Shanel said...

Those four words "what do you think" mean a lot. It makes the employees feel like they are engaging in the activities at work and they can put their input in. I believe these are very powerful words that make the employees feel like they are apart of the business and they take some type of participation in the business.

Donald said...

I think those four words are flattering as an employee because working for a company effects both employees and managers. I like the idea of getting input from the ground up as opposed to receiving implications from management down. I think ideas from both have to meet somewhere in the middle.

Arthur said...

I feel that these four word or extremely important. In organization mangers and employees are effected as a whole. I feel that these word are power and should be used more frequently.

Melissa Dennis said...

Even if nothing comes of my thoughts, ideas, or opinions, it is always nice to know that someone cares what I think. Nothing makes me feel more appreciated than for someone to ask me what I think about something.

Rhesha said...

This seems to go along with a lot of other messages that deal with respect to others. Most peoples favorite topics are their own ideas so I can see where this is a very useful tool.

Kelly said...

This is an interesting theory that I have tried before. In a work sense it is good to get opinions and fresh ideas; however there is always the problem of what next. It's good to get different people's thoughts, but sometimes they expect you to follow through with their ideas when they are not logical. This can sometimes cause problems especially when two employees have conflicting ideas.

Taylor said...

Those words are very improtant to a company. It makes your employees feel that they have a say in what goes on, rather than just being told what to do. It makes them feel valued.

Travis said...

Getting other employees opinions is so important. I absolutely hate when managers act like they know it all. They don't! Sometimes you can learn from the bottom up in an organization. I would bet it happens alot from time to time. Tom Peters is the man!

JNicole said...

I think those four words are important because people should want to know what others think. I learn from getting input from others because they can tell you something that you never knew about or wanted to know more of. If everyone would listen to what others think about a situation then more things would get accomplished.

Chad Taylor said...

Empowerment is an important role in management, letting an employee know that he is valuable increases the workload that you may get out of him. I use this technique often at work and it really does work. It creates more of a team feel to the organization. This has many upsides and few downsides. You can even use it on strangers, try it at the gas station and see if the clerk doesn't more actively engage in a conversation.

Cynthia Haley said...

At the glance of the video title, I must say that the four words conveyed was not exactly what I expected. From my own experiences, when a colleague asks, “what do you think”, it does give you a certain appreciation that they value your opinion. Brainstorming and collaborating as a team certainly subjects us to seeing things in new perspectives and intrigues us with new viewpoints. However, there is also a chance that there may be differences of opinions. More often than not, I have to remind myself that it is certainly normally to agree to disagree regarding these opinions.

Shawn Smith said...

What Do You Think? Those are some very important words. I agree that it makes the person being asked that question feel as if their opinion is valued. When all of the workers in a workplace feel like people of interest, then the overall feeling in the building improves.

David said...

I had to chuckle to myself a little bit after watching this. I use those exact words often in a variety of settings usually just to see what type of reaction I'll get and it's amazing how many people are caught off guard and end up searching for things to say. The important point though is how much more information you do end up getting. Often it is information that you did not know or had not previously considered.

Jerry said...

Those four words can make a huge difference in the success of a company. If you allow the employees to give their opinions, and show them that the leaders of a company value their opinions then they are more likey to become a more productive individual.

BrittBritt said...

I have a boss that ask me all the time "What do you think?" and I love it. I feel like I have some input into the decisions that are made. Whether or not he takes my office, he knows how I feel about something. I believe it is important for employees to have say at work and express how they feel.

Linda Yarber said...

What do you think? is very powerful. Mangers and store owners should ask the customers that question. It will make the customers feel like their opinion is important in management decisions. It can also let the manager or owner know where they need to improve or what they need to implement in the organization to make them more profitable. Management may not use all of their opinions but I’m quite sure they will put some of them to use.

Amanda Gagneaux said...

Off the top of my head I think of two different situations where I hear "What do you think?". The first is at work, my managers will ask me and in this situation, I like these four words. They make me feel like I matter and am an asset to the company. The second situation is when I'm in class. Now in this situation I hate these four words! I start getting all nervous and sweaty and never know if I'm thinking the wrong or right thing so I tend to just clam up and not say anything at all!

Willford Montgomery said...

I know during the course of a day I hear that phrase numerous times. Whether it be at work or at home it is consistent. I even catch myself saying it at times. It is a very engaging question. If a manager asks that question to his/her employees that means they are interested in the opinions of their people. Sometimes being able to have a say in things go along way. If employees have the ability or right to help lay out some of the process they use daily they would most likely be happier in their job and in turn produce or function better on their jobs.

Taylor Keith said...

17. I have been apart of companies that did not care about what you had to say about the business. They think their company and products are perfect as they are and your input does not matter. It makes a employee feel like that they are not needed and are expendable. I know from my own experience, this does not make you work any harder for them than you need to. If an employee feels that they are needed and that their input is wanted they will want your company to succeed. A happy worker is a good worker.

I think the the four words "What do you think?" are very empowering words. They words do make me feel important when someone asks me those words as an employee. It makes you feel as an employee that you are needed in and everyone's opinion matters in what the company does. If you don't hear those words as an employee, you feel as an employee that your opinion does have much affect on what the company does.

John Edmund Sencial said...

This video relates very much to what I'm doing right. I'm commenting on a subject and giving my opinion which is basically Dr. Wyld asking What Do I Think?

John Edmund Sencial said...

"What Do You Think?". Just by asking this question in a business organization you give someone empowerment. You make them feel important and as if their opinion is truly necessary. This question should be used as a morale booster as well.

Renee said...

I agree! I think those 4 words, spoken sincerely by management, would truly empower an employee and encourage innovation and loyalty.

brandonmehrgut said...

I think this video makes sense because it is showing that the employee has value. When employees have value, they feel empowered, and once this happens they can make important decisions on their own which is fundamental for an organizations growth.

Byoung said...

One man cannot do it all by himself. Employees dedicated a lot of time and energy to make you happy. Asking these questions is needed to understand their insight and opinions, some of which are probably really helpful.

Lona said...

These four words, " What do you think", are very powerful and also flattering. Just as Tom Peters stated, when you are asked this question it means, "You are a person of value who has an opinion that I want to hear". That is very encouraging and makes me feel appreciated to be apart of a company. My opinion matters, whether you agree to it or not. This keeps employees motivated to strive for the best.

Jackson Ricau said...

I have to agree with Mr. Peters. It's pure wisdom coming from this man. If you ask someone what they think, you are clearly showing them that they are of some value to you and/or the company. Plus, asking them what they think can sometimes lead to ideas and new procedures.

Vanna Harriman said...

Finding out what other employees think can be very important in an organization. People are going to need feedback on their ideas. I agree that asking someone what do they think about a situation or idea is showing that person has some sort of value and importance in the company and to you.

Matt Jones said...

"What do you think?" I agree with Tom Peters when he states that this is the most important question as a manager. By asking questions like this allow you to run a good business more effectively and more efficiently.

Matt Jones said...

I always love when someone asks me when I think about a topic. This makes me feel wanted and I feel like I contributed to the situation at hand. That’s way I think this is a great trait to possess as a manager trying to get the very best out of his employees.

C.Short said...

some people thrive off giving opinions, it really makes them feel as if they are important. Its a great tool to began a relationship with and employee or a student etc. also they opinion may be valuable to the situation.

Trent Tarver said...

Something about Tom Peters aggravates me but I do agree with the importance of the term "what do you think?" Others' opinions are highly important not only in an organization but in anything. Without a person challenging what you believe, how can you ever expect to grow and develop?

Trent Tarver said...

Being considerate of what others think is very important. Adding on to the importance of asking "what do you think" is the act of actually listening and taking into consideration what the other person thinks. Many times people think that just asking is enough and it is not.

Jessica Rice said...

"What do you think?" Very interesting point, never thought of it like that before but yet so true. What consumers, and employees think is very critical to the success of the business.

ChrisSaintsedo said...

I have a boss that I consider to be pretty close to. We both interact well and he does come to his employees with questions and opinions. I don't know if he has ever used the four words but he has used variations of them. I think its important to ask those around you because no one person has all the answers. If you can learn to get help from outside sources you can become more successful and solve issues that otherwise would still exist.

Jessica Landry said...

I never realized this, but I don’t think I ever say these very important 4 words enough. I seem to always be listening to friends’ stories and never really ask them what they think because I am assuming they want to know what I think. This was very enlightening!

Jessica Landry said...

If we asked each other “What do you think?” more often then just telling people what our opinions are those people who trust and confide in us more because we showed them that we valued their opinion on the situation. Come to think of it I like it when people ask me that question.

Hope Bahm said...

"What do you think?" I think Tom Peter's idea that asking those four words to employees makes them feel empowered and more apt to bring their opinions to the table. We never know what another person thinks until we take the time to ask. A brilliant idea or solution to a problem can be missed by not asking those four words. I believe everyone has something to bring to the table if given the chance.

Stephanie Troxler said...

These four words that are mentioned in this video, I think are definitley most important in Management. A good start to organization's success is finding out what all the other employees think. Whenever a person is asked for their opinion or a suggestion it makes them feel like good about helping and being involved

Landon Kemp said...

I like the idea that the four words Peters asks are "What do you think". I think this is a great question to ask employees because it gives them a sense of importance that their opinion gets to be heard by their boss. Everybody likes giving their input and this is a great way to find out your employee's input.

MsKerWill said...

"What do YOU think?", excellent phrase. Once I heard these four words, I immediately "felt empowered". Simple, yet concise, way to involve anyone in an event. Tom Peters has given great advice on the video blogs.

candace said...

I think that "what do you think?" is a great sentence for managers to say. Just because you are managing people doesn't mean you shouldn't be open to ideas and opinions from others. It is the ideas and opinions from your coworkers that help your company learn and grow. I always seem to agree with what Tom Peters has to say.

Elaine Gulley said...

Once again I agree with Tom Peters. By asking employees what they think it makes them feel as though they are of value and that their opinions counts. Watching this video made me think of the show "Undercover Boss". "What do you think?" are four words that could serve to be extremely beneficial to managers on many levels.

Tiffany.Fruchtnicht said...

“What do you think”, this is not only a question, but a sign of respect. Weather it come from a parents, friend, professor, coworker, or boss it always means something great. This phrase means you matter to the person on that other end. This phrase means that you opinion is valued and that they hold you to some level of knowledge or skill. I personally love when I have this feeling, one of those things that make me feel important.

Matt Johnson said...

What do I think? Well I think Tom Peters is on to something. I find myself asking what do you think regularly throughout my days. I usually look up to these people no matter what it is they do. Sometimes, they may just turn it back around on me though, giving me time to think on the subject. You learn a lot more listening than flapping your trap.

RozarionAnders said...

Those are some important words. When asked those words a person feel like they opinion matter that they matter. I think more boss's should ask their employees that question more often.i ask my finance what she think every time a decision needs to be made.

toshia said...

these four words always are important cause employees always want to know people's opinions and ways that can better themselves.

kala said...

It is very important to verbally express your interest in your employees opinions. Those are strong words in the cooperate world. "What do you think?' is such a simple question but opens the doors to so much more.

Cierra said...

These four words can be very powerful. Not only will the employee feel worthy that there opinion matters, but it can also help the manager out by getting others intakes.

Megan VanderMeulen said...

"What do you think?" I definitely think these are the most important words in management. An important characteristic for a manager to have is to be interested in other employees input and opinions. Also, whenever a person is asked for their opinion or suggestion, it makes them good about helping and being involved.

Richie Battistini said...

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and wish for their voice to be heard. It is important for an organization to have good communication, in order for that to happen managers must at times rely on their employees opinions.

Connor Mulvany said...

The four words, "What do you think" are four powerful words. They are important in the workplace as well as in life in general. They empower the person who is asked "What do you think". It puts trust in the person who is asked. I wish that my manager and other co-workers would ask these four words more often to get other opinions on different aspects of work.

Garett Templet said...

I believe that the words "what do you think make a person feel needed and important. When you ask a person that it means that you care about their opinion and feel strongly that they will have a good input on the subject.

Ashley Brewer said...

I agree, this is a brilliant concept. It will help management make decisions, while building employees’ self-worth resulting in a more efficient worker. When employees feel valued and a “part of the company” it makes them want the company to succeed. They will put forth a greater effort into contributing to the greater good of the company.

Lewis Gaines said...

I agree with this, the upper and lower managers should ask "what do you think?" to all employees to help improve the business. The employees that deal with the customers every day would get more feedback than the managers, and could relay it back to management with an open conversation. If you do not ask this the employees could feel like their opinion does not matter, and can discourage the employees. Just 4 simple words, “what do you think?” can make a difference in success or failure to the business.

Carrie K said...

This is a very good theory. Asking employees what they think makes them feel more important and included in decision making which goes a long way.

Javeria said...

I've seen a handful of videos from Tom Peters now and he almost always gives great advice and has sound theories, as is the case with this one. "What do you think" definitely are important words in management because one of the best way to manage your company is to get the feedback of your fellow employees so you can take that into consideration and run the most efficient possible company.

Porcha Riley said...

I agree with Tom Peters. The words “What do you think,” shows that a person values your opinion which then makes people feel special. It also lets you know that you are counted on and trusted. This makes you feel included and not left out.

kevin patton said...

i think the words mean alot but i think their can be stronger words out there to consider. its really good on what he is trying to say and all. i jut feel more to it than just those simple words.

Debra Tucker said...

I agree with Tom Peters comment on the most four important words in a company because it simply means someone cares about your thoughts. There words are valuable in any organization because it gives the employees a chance to voice their concerns, and opinions on several matters. When employees are included in certain decision making processes it can promote new ideas and a feeling of participation in the company operations.

Donald Bastoe said...

Those are very empowering words, to be sure. Sometimes all someone needs to boost confidence and give him a feeling of meaning is a simple verbal delegation of authority. And this goes hand in hand with the last video link where this guy talked about the importance of really listening to someone.

Ironically, those words have the exact opposite effect if said sarcastically.

Tyler Kampmann said...

I don't know if these are the most important words but they are definitely really important. You have to find out what people think about issues so you can try to find the best solutions to the issue. you need to get many different opinions so you can get an overall perspective on the task at hand and this only can happen if you ask what do you think.

Jeffrey Wallette said...

As a manager, you have to make decisions. You have to be independent in mind to be able to make the hard decisions that your job requires. You can't nod your head and hope everything ends up alright, especially if you have something to say. So, what do you think?

Natalie said...

I agree that the question "What do you think?" makes a person think that you value their opinion & outlook of the situation. By feeling of value, the person has more confidence & willingness to succeed in their tasks at hand.

Takeytra Kendrick said...

The four words "What Do You Think?" is a great tool to use as a manager. When you ask employees for their input, it makes seem as though their opinion and ideas count. It also will bring success to the company because the employees will feel like they are valued and put forth more effort to keep the company successful.

Elizabeth Bee said...

The four most important words in any organization are “what do you think?” I know he is right about those being the words most commonly spoken. When we want to know our coworkers’ opinions of something, that is the question that we ask them. You ask people that whenever you want to know their feeling about a project or business work.

Justin Daniel said...

I don't know if I agree that those words are as important as he thinks it is. But on a personal level I do think that "what do you think" is a great way to show a person that their oppinion is important. I think that in my everyday life I do ask someone what do you think at least once a day or a couple times a week.

jacq1983 said...

This video made me realize that I rarely ask other people in my work environment those four words. I always assume people will just give their input regardless but actually asking the question shows that you are interested in the ideas of other people. It makes them feel a sense of importance in an organization. You can get many different perspectives from asking this simple question.

Tabitha K James said...

This is beautiful. "What do you think?" is a way to empower an employee that is often the hardest way to make an employee feel connected to the business or his occupation within the business. Just thinking that an employees input might matter helps their self esteem in a way that could do some serious good.

Jordan Hymel said...

Those four words are really powerful. They can make any employee feel really important to the business. I think it really is important for managers to ask employees this because you never know when someone can come up with such a great idea or solution. People all have opinions and sometimes there opinion has a greater impact than what you come up with. It's better to hear everybody's opinion then make a decision.

Melanie said...

When people ask,"What do you think"? I think it means they value your opinion and they want to include you in on their decision. In business it can mean profits for the company and your self

Erin Janway said...

WOW I have never thought of those four words "What do you think" in this way. It is so true when you ask someone this question you are really telling them that you value their opinion; that what they have to say means something to you. I am going to try this and see the outcome. So many people have so many opinions, thoughts and ideas, but who you ask and whose opinion do you value?

Emily Hanegan said...

I think these are very important words. It shows your employees that you value their opinion. It also can open up new ideas and inspiration. These words are key to a successful business and can lead to growth.

LPaige said...

I LOVE this! I completely agree with Mr. Peters. This is something I'm going to work on doing more with my employees. I've never heard it put in such simple terms. If people know they are valued at work, they will perform better, and might even enjoy coming to work.

Foster said...

What do you think? When a boss says this to their employee it means that he values your input and relies on you to make help make a decision. But you also got to be careful because if you keep on disagreeing with his ideas it could lead to trouble.

Shelby Law said...

I like to know that my opinion is valued, but at the same time I hate being put on the spot. "What do you think?" are very important words for a business to keep everyone on the same page and for people to not be scared to say their ideas.

MeganAStevens7 said...

"What do you think?" Well that is an interesting set of words there. But he is right... It is pretty amazing how we value other people's thoughts on a daily basis. I am defiantly going to be more impressed the next time I get asked those four words.

Jenice Jones said...

“What do you think”? I think that everyone needs to learn this saying, especially people in a management position. The input of other in your team is essential for the success of your company. Good teamwork makes or breaks a company. Plus, if a person in the lower level is asked their opinion by the upper level it boosts the morale of the workers. People feel valued and they matter to the company. Asking people what they think about something shows them that they are a part of the team.

Jonathan Byrd said...

I think this is true for more than just being a manager. Asking people what do they think is a good thing no matter who you are. Everyone likes to be asked what their opinions are. I will definitely use this more in the future.

Gwyn Mendez said...

This should be on an index card that we carry around so as not to forget to ask people. We tend to be selfish individuals and need reminders to ask people what do you think. What a great way to make people feel valuable, that their opinion matters. This encourages teamwork. People like to know they are not just a body taking up space. People want to know that they matter. I know I will be put this into practice.

Lin said...

I don't think I have ever considered saying the words, what do you think. But after listening to this, I can definitely consider doing this. I see value in these four words. It will open up my mind to receive what others have to say. I like this concept.

Ches Winburn said...

i have never really heard this before. its is definitely an interesting concept. it really reminds you to stop and consider what someone else thinks. it is always good to get opinions. this will help prevent errors and problems in any situation. i will definitely try to do this more throughout my career.

Lauren Guy said...

What do you think? I am someone to ask the opinions of others, especially at the work environment. When my family and I owned our own business, I loved to get the employees concept and thoughts about things related to their job, because I knew how important it made me feel when I was asked, and making my employees feel like there are a valuable employee made me feel better also.

Preston said...

But... most people are sooo stupid. If you are an expert on the particular topic, sure, I care what you think. Most people think they are experts, and are simply bafoons!!

Monica Crane said...

The four most important words only work if you really care to hear and listen to others opinions. I do agree that when someone asks you what you think that it does make you feel as if what you have to say is valued.

Sandra Valdes said...

I think asking employees what they think makes them feel as though their opinion matters and would probably make them better workers because they feel like they have a purpose but I also feel that it’s only important if management actually cares about what the employee says.

Erica Reker said...

I as a manager, often say these four words. It is very important to make your employees feel needed. When they feel as though they are a valuable asset, they work harder. I never realized how many times I use, or hear, those four words. It is actually a normal thing though!

Blaine Bennett said...

I agree with Tom even though I never really gave those words much thought. When someone of authority asks an employee under them "what do you think" it shows that they trust your opinion and decision making to ask for your input. Spoken from the employee stand point it makes you feel more important towards the company to have a voice and opinion especially if it is a major decision or project.

Blaine Bennett said...

It seems as this is a very big problem in Russia, but hard to exterminate. Although, people would like to get rid of bribery it is hard to make that transition because it seems that you have to bribe to compete with the other companies. I feel that bribery is wasted money that could be used towards bettering your company ethically or helping the community around the business.

Jeremy Dicus said...

ASking What do you think seems like a very confidence building 4 words. As an employee being asked what do i think I feel like more than just an SSN number in a file in the backroom or a expense every week. I feel like my opinion actually matters and for somebody to actually step out of their box and ask somebody for their opinion is a wise move because the possiblility at new ideas is endless.

Brandon.10 said...

I think the four words are very important. Many people look pass what they think exactly everyday at work and believe that it is all fine and dandy. When truly the thoughts and contributions that you might have will truly take the success of the business to the next level. I agree with the article completely don't be afraid to try these 4 words on a daily basis.

bridgetb said...

I really liked this video because it makes you think about what to say when asked those four words. A person should always be prepared to be asked that question especially if they are in an interview for a position. This is a great video for anyone to watch.

seth leonard said...

Asking "what do you think?" can be one of the best ways to engage people in whatever subject matter you may need them to. I have a science professor who never gives a straight forward answer, but he will constantly ask, what do you think? For the first couple of weeks, this professor just annoyed me, and made me feel like I would never know the answer. Instead it created an environment that challenged us to think critically and figure out the answer on our own. I also think that this idea is a great way to get opinions and view points outside of your own, which will cause you to be more innovative and efficient then you could be on your own.

Megan VanderMeulen said...

I never realized this, but I don’t think I ever say these very important 4 words enough. I seem to always be listening to friends’ stories and never really ask them what they think because I am assuming they want to know what I think. This was very enlightening!
