STATUS QUO

The president won a sweeping victory but still must face down House Republicans. Howard Kurtz on whether Obama has a prayer of easing Washington's gridlock. Plus, James Warren on what to expect from the president's second term.

STORM WATCH

Just as New York and New Jersey officials were struggling to assess the scope of the housing crisis after the storm, a new nor'easter forced fresh evacuations. Malcolm Jones on the confusion. Plus, Michael Daly on how the nor'easter batters the Rockaways.

NEW DAY

No rest for the weary. President Obama will replace at least three high-level Cabinet members after his reelection, with some sources saying that U.N. envoy Susan Rice is one of the top contenders to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Rice is believed to be the president's top choice despite her recent remarks on the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya. The other top contenders include Sen. John Kerry, who heads the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and National Security Adviser Tom Donilon. But Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley said on Wednesday that the president's first order of business will be replacing Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Mitt Romney's bid for the White House was doomed by his failure to raise enough funds, claims a report in Thursday's Wall Street Journal. After the long and bruising GOP nomination fight, Romney had spent more money than he'd realized, making money the campaign's biggest worry in the spring. Romney had spent so much money in the primaries that he couldn't begin spending his general-election funds until he accepted the GOP nomination at the end of August, which also put him at a serious disadvantage. The constant need for money had driven Romney to a private fundraiser at a Florida donor's mansion in May, where he made his now-infamous "47 percent" remarks.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

China's Hu Jintao warned on Thursday that corruption could be lethal to the Communist Party at the country's conference to transfer power. Hu's successor, Xi Jinping, is being unveiled this week at the 18th Communist Party Congress. Speaking at the Great Hall of the People to a crowd of over 2,600 delegates, Hu told the delegates they needed to focus on "social harmony" and "stability"—two goals that seem ever loftier after the scandal involving Bo Xilai, the senior Communist official expelled from the party following questions involving his involvement in the murder last year of British diplomat Neil Heywood.

She faced down a slew of offensive attacks, battled a barrage of big business money, and fought her way to the United States Senate. Sorry, Scott Brown: this seat's taken.
