Car bombs in Syria's southern town of Daraa are reported to have killed as many as 20 soldiers. Opposition delegates meeting in Qatar remain at odds over the composition of a potential government-in-waiting.

Pakistan says education key to tackling Taliban
Pakistan has declared education for girls as a way to subdue Taliban extremists who wounded a young campaigner last month. A petition honoring Malala Yousafzai has been delivered to Islamabad by UN envoy Gordon Brown.

Israel kills at least 3 in border violence
Israeli soldiers have killed three Palestinians and wounded 20 in retaliation for a rocket that hit a military jeep. In recent weeks, the Gaza border area has been the scene of heavy violence and counterattacks.

Vatileaks accomplice given suspended sentence
A computer technician convicted of obstructing justice during the probe into stolen Vatican documents has been given a suspended sentence. The documents were leaked by the Pope's former butler to the press.
South Asia
Sri Lanka prison death toll rises
Dozens of people are dead and several escaped prisoners are at large following a major prison riot in Sri Lanka. The prison holds some former Tamil rebels, but it is not clear whether they played a role in the violence.

Greens pick 2013 poll candidates in direct vote
In a vote of party members, Germany's Greens have nominated their top candidates for next year's federal elections. It is the first time a party has directly voted for a candidate.

German violin dealer jailed for fraud
One of the world's leading dealers in stringed instruments has been jailed for fraud and embezzlement. The German violin expert's web of deceit was exposed after his business collapsed in 2010.
